260Coupe Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Hi guys I went and met Freddy from Topstage Composits today and got a price on reproducing my Prince GTB airbox in carbon fibre. (BTW his work is first class!) The price on a repro airbox in 100% carbon fibre will be $450 ex gst if I can get a minimum of 10 (ten) firm orders (this is my break even price). Once I get 10 orders I will then request a 50% deposit to cover materials and initial labour (CF is exy at $85 per sq/m) , I will then remove the induction system from my Zed and get Freddy to start work on the mould. (Allow four weeks to manufacture mould and 10 x air boxes) The airbox will be supplied with a blank rear panel to be hole cut as required so it can be fitted to most triple carb applications (Ram tubes and 90 deg elbow not included in price) The benifit is that this airbox is dyno proven, slim line and allows for crank case and rocker cover venting to be connected (EPA friendly) Cheers Alan Fildes Life Member NDSOC Quote
Riceburner Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 This would be fantastic. Definately put me down for one Alan! Thanks. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 13, 2011 Moderators Posted April 13, 2011 Hoping the funds will allow but yeah...I'd be in it.. Quote
GV260 Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Will it come with the vent hole already pre-drilled? If not then I will order one as well. Quote
260Coupe Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 there will be no holes in the airbox at all (only the 80mm inlet hole in the top cover) so you can cut holes to suit your particular application (triple carbs, injection throttle bodies etc) BTW- shipping interstate at additional cost So we have Gareth Dimitri GV260 I may get a few more buyers at the Zed Nationals over Easter to make up further numbers cheers Alan Quote
benny Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 us there an option for glass only as a cheaper alternative to make up numbers? Quote
260Coupe Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 There may be some possible savings if made in F/G however the glass will be considerably thicker to get the same rigidity, labour is the same so it will only be the materials cost saving. I will look into a Fibre Glass option Alan Quote
260Coupe Posted April 14, 2011 Author Posted April 14, 2011 Fibre Glass option could be made available for aprrox $270 ex gst Quote
mossy Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Put me down Alan for a F/glass one. I notice the MJP airbox comes in a mesh pattern glass mat which looks similar to carbon, I wonder if the topstage one will be the same? Quote
GV260 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Can you clarify how much thicker (ie depth measurement increase) the FG version would be? Quote
260Coupe Posted April 14, 2011 Author Posted April 14, 2011 No idea on the thickness of the F/G V's the C/F until the mould and some prototypes are made............and these can't be made until I get 10 x firm orders with deposits Sort of a chicken and egg thing Alan Quote
NZeder Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 what would it look like if mounted on the other side of the engine bay aka a triple throttle bodies RB engine no idea what the bottom looks like and if flipped would look ok? I could be down for one if it looks good when flipped. Not sure if F/G or C/F Don't worry about my location I will have some in Melbourne collect and store for me Quote
Sirpent Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Geeeeeeeeeeez Looks like this died a quick death, what happened? Quote
mossy Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 Looks like there was only around 6 interested I might have to look at the MJP box then. Quote
Kent Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 if it ever pans out, you can put me down for a fiberglass one. where would you get the elbow pipe attached to the box shown in the picture? Kent Quote
260Coupe Posted May 11, 2011 Author Posted May 11, 2011 Kent still not enough committed interest to warrant making the mould 90 deg elbows in various sizes can be sourced from auto and truck supply specialists.........there is a local supplier here in Melbourne where I found the silicon 80 to 65mm reducer Alan Quote
Kent Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 no problems.. just let me know if the numbers do eventually get up there. thanks Quote
NZeder Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Can we try and get this going again for the 3rd time? I would be down for 1 100% Quote
Riceburner Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Would it be possible to get some dimensions Allan, especially the depth of the outer half of the airbox. As you know, I have an odd ball setup with long ram tubes, but I may be able to customize it to fit. Would it be ok to buy just the outer half? Quote
260Coupe Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 Depth is approx. 90mm at the front carby and 75mm at the rear leaving around 30mm clearance between the lid and the strut tower (on Zed) I don't have the time to collate interest so if someone would like to take this on and collect deposits, once a $1000 is raised I'll get the mould underway (fully refundable if the deal falls over for what ever reason). Backing plates will be blank to allow multi use applications, as I'll need to remove the entire induction system to take the airbox off the carbs, if/when enough interest is raised I'll start the ball rolling again and confirm pricing, hopefully the $400 each mark should still cover costs. The benefits as stated previously are more mid range torque, far less noise and you can plumb in the crank case and rocker cover vents to comply with EPA regs (catch cans are not EPA friendly). The set up looks factory fitted and can be used with a 280z filter housing (from the US S30 with the injected L28 easy found on ebay) which bolts straight in front of the radiator and far superior to pod filters (again proven by dyno testing) . Anyway guys I'm happy to go to the effort to get the air boxes made but l'll have to leave it up to one of you to champion the cause and collate interest and chase deposits. cheers Alan Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 14, 2013 Administrators Posted August 14, 2013 Alan it's great to see you are trying to make this happen, I myself would be interested if they fit a set of Triple Mikuni 44 carbs? However as odd as it may sound I actually would prefer it as pressed metal as opposed to carbon fibre to give that true stock look. I don't know how difficult these are to get? But would imagine that in Japan there would be many interested (if it's not possible to source OEM anymore). Anyway you can stick me down as another interested party, when if this goes ahead. Quote
NZeder Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I don't know how difficult these are to get? But would imagine that in Japan there would be many interested (if it's not possible to source OEM anymore). Hen teeth, rocking horse shiver, I did manage to find one new on an auction site but 90,000 yen before agent fees, shipping etc so that put it at over $1400NZD at a guess....I too would like a metal one for the true period look but that is going to be near impossible. Anyway you can stick me down as another interested party, when if this goes ahead. So count let go lads. 1. NZeder 2. Gav240z Quote
BAM083 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I'm definately keen to get one if we can get numbers 1. NZeder 2. Gav240z 3. BAM083 Quote
Riceburner Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Thanks Alan for taking the time to grab the measurements. I'll confirm my interest after doing some measuring on the weekend. Quote
