acf321 replied to acf321's topic in Members Project(s) Journal
OK, we should have a blue slip either Friday, or very early next week. On another note, got some very impressive quick bits in the mail over the Xmas break. Guaranteed to cut another 2 secs+ a lap they tell me, also used by one Sterling Moss!! -
Hi Crew, Anybody in Sydney or elsewhere that has a spare 240z high beam switch? Needed for The Brown Hornet for blue slip this weekend.... Calling all Z buddies, the Hornet needs you! Pls PM me if you have the part. I can even replace it if needed, just need for rego ! Adam

call Jimmy Flett at M.I.A Engine Services in Dee Why, or Stew Wilkins at SWMotorsport. Get it done properly first. Good luck.

Just wondering if anybody has found a solution to warn hood hinges on 240/260Z's? Mine are apparently warn, meaning that with the torsion rods in place, they are popping the leading edge of my bonnet up about 3/4". Rather than buying a second hand set that may have the same issues, has anybody succeeded in rejuvenating existing hinges with new pins or similar? Similarly, does anybody know if you are still able to buy new hood hinges for 240Z? Regards Adam

car is being trailered to James tomorrow to iron out those bugs and get blue slipped (I hope). Had to go berserk today and put in as much as I could to ensure it gets through. With the exception of the carpets and centre console, I think we're just about there. I put on the bullet mirrors, and had to make a quick decision to spray the louvres with a can of black satin. Here's the result, i'll let you decide but to me the car kind of does look bit more like a bee (um Hornet) with the black and Papaya Orange contrast. Fouled a few plugs too.... just as I was warned I would. Definitely not one for bumper to bumper traffic, that's for sure! Adam. -

Update on the Hornet. The shakedown continues, as does putting a whole lot of little bits and pieces on the car. The last few days (well parts of days really) has included re-installing the wiper bottle and getting wiring sorted. I put on the wipers, only to have that annoying problem on when you turn them off, they stop wherever they like on the screen and are almost impossible to get to where you want them (any suggestions here, greatly appreciated), installed newly covered seats - they look awesome, added grill, interior garnish and fiddled with all the switches and so on. Funny story, I was out running her about today early and this elderly woman runs across the road to me shouting and waving her hands ... I think OMG so I stop the car, and lean out the window saying; "sorry I know its not registered and its loud, BUT ..." and she cuts me off saying: "is it a Datsun", 'Yes I say", she then offers; "come over to my garage down the street, I have a near new set of 'Datsun' rubber and carpet mats that we used to have in my Datsun, and this could would look great with them". Drove over there, to be mobbed by another neighbour saying; "is this one of Z cars, my husband had one years and years ago, and we loved it". Actually very funny, these two older woman guffawing over my 240Z, both just loving it and I had never met either of them before. I've just written a list of gremlins, in the main wiring (which is fairly messy) and will take the car back to James tomorrow to have this rectified and brakes properly calibrated. NZeder tells me i might need a bigger MC to take account of the MK63s. Blue slip should happen this week. I'm absolutely blown away by this car ... its unbelievably good and so much want to take it on a very very long run. Anyway, here's some pics I took at the end of the say ... yes I know, there are some unnecessary racey bits there, but I want them (if you can pick it!). Adam -
944 hands down. Amazing and understated sports car. shoot for a turbo, and get onto Lyndsey racing in the US ... amazing tuning ability and strong as an axe.

Welcome Ferris, That sounds like hornsby or thereabouts, my old stomping ground. Do you have any apecs, photos of your 240z you can share with us? I have several mates over that way with wild 240's in their sheds, so perhaps we should arrange a drive soon. Welcome to the forum Adam - The Brown Hornet - -
F/S set (2X) Schroth 4 point racing harnesses. Blue in colour / good clean and tidy condition / located in Sydney. I purchased these for my project but have decided against using them for the moment. $150 + freight from Sydney. PM me if interested. Adam

Have been in the shed and here are a few bits and pieces I really need, if you can help; 1) OEM tow hooks for 240Z. I would specifically like the rear hook that bolts onto the rear bumper mounting plate, but if you have the front one that will also go to a good home 2) Spare wheel masonite cover 3) air vent knob + screw - for under the dash. I need one only 4) OEM Jack + spare steel wheel. 5) OEM chrome screw for chrome coat hanger (I have the chrome hanger knob, but I have lost one of the screws that goes into the roof at the top of the B Pillar) 6) Chrome overriders for passenger doo handle pull (I have the handle, but the chrome caps for the ends are missing) 7) engine tray (the metal enigine cover that bolts under the engine onto the frame) Please PM me if you have any of these bits and pieces. Cheers & Merry Christmas! Adam

Hi Folks, As the ad says, I need an OEM air vent knob and screw for the Brown Hornet! Just finishing off the interior and this part is missing on one side. I am sure there are loads of these things in ice-cream containers in garages looking for homes! PM me, if availble Cheers Adam

I just had my 240Z seat covers properly fitted by a really good auto trimmer here in Sydney (Artarmon). The seat backs look tailor made now and i am very impressed. He had to cut them and re-stitch and so on. When I was there, I enquired about a hand cut set of woolen loop pile carpets. He said; "sure, we can do that, allow $2,200-$2,500 depending on which carpet you choose". I left pretty soon thereafter!

Hi Folks, THe fuel gauge in my 71 240Z appears to be not working, and the dash light in the temp gauge has a faulty globe. Does anyone know how to remove these dials, and replace the globes when the dash is in place, in the car? Also does anybody know if the 71Z fuel gauge has a low warning light? Thanks in advance, Adam

Mossy..... Lovely car mate. Think you need to bring that to SYDNEY show I can show you the back of my car... from a long distance! want a fight? Adam. p.s looks awesome!

put the seats and drivers belt in today and could not help myself...... Car is unbelievable, and that is obviously below 4500 rpm and much varied. Just took her down a few streets I know well and immediate impressions; 1) I cannot believe the almost telepathic throttle response, the motor feels like is has NO flywheel and even the slightest brush of the throttle ends in a very real bark, 2) it sits much lower than OEM, but even on some really crappy roads with lots of potholes (ok maybe i did a few more streets) the koni yellow and 1" lower King Springs work beautifully... NO JARRING or harshness that you might expect with full on variable sport Koni's. Remember too, my rear struts were sectioned about an inch and the top bound coil in the front springs are gone ... very initial impressions are EXCELLENT, and this is coming from someone that know's good handling cars, 3) yes ... there was that 'hello its me again' fuel smell that was there in my first 240Z over ten years back ... but to be honest I think there is a grommet missing in the firewall (suspect that won't make it disappear though!), 4) brakes are useless ... they need to be totally re-calibrated, and perhaps there is air in there, 5) the cam is very noticeable at about 4250RPM, lots of torque below, but at this level the car just lurches (not you mate) and wants to race forward, 6) literally every person did a double take, the noise is LOUD !!!!! and that is with double muffler setup and 2.5" pipe. Still very much running in and not registered ... can't wait to get this thing out and totally wring its neck hard! Adam -
MIA is in Thew Parade Dee Why. Number is 9982 5288, ask for James Flett. They are very good, attention to detail is excellent.

James called today ... The Hornet's been all fixed up with the carbs and extractors removed and refitted, linkages all sorted out and the car dyno'd only today for about 15miles according to James. Said he was very gentle on it, but its good to run in now. Will be coming home this weekend for belts and seats to be installed and final bits and pieces before heading back in Jan / Feb for blueslip. Won't be able to drive it of course, but i'd be mad to not let the oil move around a bit .... maybe, kind of.. Another important decision has popped up ... to Mikuni S5 on correct factory Datsun Competition manifold or to not Mikuni S5?!?!? cheers -
Yeah that's a great idea Gav, and I know we spoke about this the other day. A well worthwhile exercise I think, particularly as these cars are getting rarer and some of us are keen to see if we can't put the numbers back the way they were made. At the end of the day, its not a deal breaker having the wrong number (especially when its the correct L designation motor in the car) but you'd have it if were just lying about looking for a home. Lurchos, thanks for having a look mate, and I totally agree that many of those motors would have gone to the wreckers, or become anchors. Having said that, nothing ventured nothing gained, and a good resource for all on this site (and other Z sites who frequent us) I think. As I mentioned earlier, I might infact have the wrong number because my number is off a not so clear photo, but i'll clear this up at the weekend to be sure.
-
Hi Folks, All this talk of matching numbers and so on, and several recent discussions with Gav on the very subject, thought i'd try my luck on seeing if my missing L24 is infact sitting in anyone's sheds (or cars). What I can tell you about my car is that it's a 4/71 Aussie delivered car Chassis number HS30-00683. As far as I can tell from photos (so excuse me if I need to correct this post at the weekend) the engine number that my car was delivered with is; 051220. So my question is to all you Z freaks out there, do you have this engine, or perhaps know of anyone that might? The car was last registered in Victoria in the 90's and was bought by my in May 09, the point at which it had an L26 in it. Obviously am prepared to pay for the engine and any transport needed should we infact find this needle in the Z-car haystack. Cheers Adam

Congrats Gav, Going to be great to have another 240z in Sydney. From Memory i just googled a car transport company to get my car delivered from Adelaide at a cost of about $600 from memory. If you need any help at all, just shout. Cheers Adam -
No doubt you've all seen Dave Sholz's hotrod 240Z in the dare to be different video recently shown on Petrolicious.com, however I am wondering if anybody knows more about that sticker on the rear screen of the car. Was this an official dealers sticker (the one that says; "datsun - dare to be be different" based around a Mikuni Carb. Was it just for the US market? Are these available anywhere? Can they be made? Interested in getting one. Cheers Adam

Hi Magnet, I have a nice L24 that I think will make 250hp, based on what the engineer has done on prior builds, and in my case. My engine was line bored, and bored 40thou taking swept volume to 2.5L. We run a balance but OEM crank, lighter internals and modified L28 valves, plus a pretty serious bit of head work (that itself took several days to a week). The motor is shown running (very gently) in my video posted on my brown hornet page. Its not even run in yet, so the revving you see does not get it beyond 3000rpm. In the video it needs the carby's re-seated as there is a vacuum leak, and they need a full tune, then dyno time. All in all, its a very quick engine to spin up, and should be very responsive to drive. On the cost side, I'd be budgeting 5-10k for the engine, depending on type of carbs and internals etc. Good luck with your decision. Adam

Hi Vorn, Love the car and the 'yukky' 920 colour too! Ahh the memories come flooding back!!! Keep up the good work with this one, should look fantastic when complete in this OEM colour. Regards Adam
