  1. Well now I'm convinced it's the OTHER wheel bearing. It's not obviously bad, but if I take the drum off, strap the wheel on and give it a few big spins I can start to hear the sound. It's nowhere near as loud as when I am in the car, but it definately seems to have the same 'rhythm'. I can imagine how under load it could sound much louder. Unfortunately I don't have the tools to get anywhere near the bearing (can't get the peened nut off,nor do I have a slide hammer), so I will have to take it into someone. Maybe it just needs a regreasing ?
  2. Thanks mate, I'm in the middle of puling out the rear end as I type (needed to come inside for some milk and cookies), and will double check it all. back to work...
  3. Hi Mate I'm from queensland. No, not quite registered, almost there though When I tried to get the roadworthy, he took it for a drive, came back and jacked it up, checked to see if the wheel was loose (which I have done several times...), and just said that it's got a bad sound that needs to be fixed. He has no idea what it is (in fact it's the first time he has seen a Z in his life., so I don't expect him to be an expert on them). Cheers
  4. It does it all the time, powering on and just rolling. I have had it up with the wheel spinning but didn't notice any sound.
  5. I'm trying to get my car registered but the guy won't give me a safety certificate because of the sound coming from the rear end. It seems to be in time with the spinning of the wheels, and sounds more like it's coming from the rear left. It's kind of a 'thud' sound which obviously gets worst the faster you go. I've had the car for almost 10 years and it's always made this sound. I have replaced the following, - moustache bar bushing - diff - wheel bearing (onthe side it seemed to be coming from) - balanced tailshaft I haven't replaced the halfshafts but I have taken them out and they _feel_ fine, no play in the U joints. Logically I guess the only thing left is the half shafts. Anything else anyone can think of ? Cheers Ray
  6. s**t, I knew that...!
  7. Ok so this is waht I got, tighten the F out of it, and if it's still a problem, do it properly! Thanks!
  8. Why is this happening? It seems to come loose pretty easily. I have one of those pulleys from a skyline, with the 3 runs on it. Is it most likely the pulley out of balance, or the engine, something else? Cheers Ray
  9. I had just never come across their kit's on the shelves and had never thought of buying a kit (nor did I imagine one was available), that's all. Ray
  10. Very interesting indeed. I am not into the extra noise nor am I a fan of the ricerboy look of the pod (unfortunately my car looks rice enough as it is...). Maybe I will try and order one from the US. Cheers PS I bet it's not cheap/easy to ship though ?
  11. That's interesting. You bought a 'kit' ? I'v enever seen kits sold, just the pod filter. Did the kit contain an elbow bend ? Cheers
  12. My EFI L28 in my 260 is still lacking an air filter. I've got a pipe made up for a pod filter (yet to buy the pod filter...), but I'm worried about getting defected/fined here in QLD. Should I just source a standard 280zx airbox and is it easy enough to bolt onto a 260 ? Cheers Ray
  13. Thanks. I'll get a photo up in a few days. I don't actually have any photos of it at the moment, and it currently has years of dust build up on it :-\
  14. Yes it will work apparently. an RB30 or Z31 AFM will work as well, although I believe that one of the wires on the RB30 AFM is switched to the Z31. It doesn't seem that simple though to get the right Z31 ECU, IIRC it has to be the 8bit (or was it the 16bit..). Ray
  15. Yes I know I should have marked them when I took them off...but that was a long time ago Actually first of all, what's the thing next to the elctric lift pump? Is it a dampener or something? I don't have it connected and my system still works (I have EFI). None of the wiring schematics ahve the fuel pump wires on there. I have my tank unit wires hooked up, and my fuel pump wires hooked up as well, but I also have a Y/G and G. I just assume these are for the pre mentioned thing next to the fuel pump. I would like to know for sure though... Cheers Ray
  16. Sorry, I've posted a couple of times on this forum now without introducting myself (How rude of me...). I live in SE QLD and have a 260z two seater. I've been the owner of it for the past 10 years almost, and to boot it was my first car as well. Unfortunately It's been garaged for the best part of five years, as I have had other commitments (Uni, living overseas etc). It started life as an automatic with those god awful flat topped carbs. At one stage I bought a 1JZGTE to plant into it but then lacked the time, funds and inclination to do the conversion, so my zed sat for quite a while (having already pulled the old motor out). I eventually bought a L28 efi setup. So now I have an rebuilt L28 with the standard EFI gear, and have converted it to a manual as well. Did it all myself as well (so expect to see it broken down on the side of the road in the near future?). The car is still unregistered and I have probably only put about 200km's on the new motor. I guess now that I'm back working and hopefully driving my zed zoon I'll need to come on this forum more often to ask how to fix whatever is broken at any given time Cheers Ray
  17. If it's in OK nick and it's runing it couldbe a very good run around car. Otherwise you can use a lot of the mechanicals to fit into your zed, i.e if you want to go EFI or something. ray
  18. If you are after more compression, get a late model E88 head. They seem to have the same modern combustion chamber type as the P90....just much smaller. Ray
  19. I rebuilt my L28 with a late model E88, unfortunately still with the smaller valves though. I wasn't really going for a performance motor though, so it doesn't bother me. I also had some flattops but was pessimistic about being able to run them without it pinging badly. Would be interested to find out how your piston/head combo goes.
  20. Yeah I guess new is usually better, as long as the quality is good. Why are there major problems running used pistons in a new motor? As long as they haven't been abused in in a high power motor or suffered damage from pinging, and you get them at a size appropriate for the block. How come you didn't use the pistons you had ?
  21. Certainly are
  22. eeek! Thanks for the heads up! Yeah I may just put them on ebay then. Not in a huge rush to sell though.
  23. Had these sitting around for a while. They are in good condition, no cracked ring lands or anything. $250. Pickup availible around brisbane/gold coast Cheers
