[QLD] - Brisbane prefecture regular city meet ("lounge meets")

Hate to say it Big G but the wife is correct, it's a WD Can't reverse once you've entered the finish garage! Next time go forwards and just flatten the flags!!! Great to see the flick though, wish I'd seen it. I tried one, it doesn't work with the ABS on -

It was a cold and foggy morning... No, seriously, it was damn cold and the fog had visibility down to a couple of hundred meters! It had all cleared and warmed up by the time entries closed though. It was a fun day with 2 x S30's, 2 x Z32TTs and an early SP310(?) convertible. The things those guys were doing to the SP310 were frightening, and made a liar out of everything I said about motorkhana being gentle. Still they looked like they were having fund and they were entertaining to watch! Due to the field being split across 2 courses and the nature of the class divisions I barely saw any runs of the S30s. I found out the hard way just how well I had managed to get the 280zx handling, and how used to it I had gotten, compared to the z32 it went round corners! The z32 is a completely different beast, the suspension is worn and stock and it's massively overpowered. So I was leaning towards either wild and out of control or slow and stilted as I tried to figure it out. the other z32 owner was kind enough to capture most of one run, though he got a bit distracted toward the end... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezMR5eeANKI Don't think I'll compete at the dirt event next weekend, the z32 is still a bit fragile. there will be other events coming though and it would be great to see some more Z's of any persuasion. Cheers, Mike -

No prob. There'll be others. In fact there is another one on next weekend at the Lockwood Heritage Museum. It's being run on dirt so I haven't decided whether to go or not. Might make a for a good Sunday drive though. -
Another alternative is some "personal lubricant" ie. KY jelly etc, works a treat and dries away without risk of damage (or dryness and irritation) Useful no matter where your fitting new rubber

I gather that this only applies in Qld , and only for road registered cars, it covers injury to persons only. Normal CTP insurance covers you up to the edge of the "pits" or non-racing track area. CAMS insurance covers you once you're on the track. In between, if you hit someone, you need a CTP extension to be covered by insurance. Without it, no club will let you compete because they then are the next most likely to be sued for damages. If you have CTP with Suncorp just walk into a branch and ask them for a "rally extension" to your CTP, costs nothing. You will need to provide them with the name of the event, the date, your name and the make, model and rego of your car. Takes about 10 minutes for them to fart-arse around printing and signing the letter. Some insurers will do it via fax and some charge a fee, won't know till you ask. -
Other things to check are your valve clearances and confirm your timing. My 280zx started playing up badly and then a few days later the dampener pulley on the crank pulley separated completely, it has the timing mark on it. I've heard of them slipping a few degrees as the rubber bond starts to disintegrate.

Looks like both Greg and I will be there having a go. I'll be figuring out how to make the z32 dance Hope to see some of you there. Come along and jump in someones car as a passenger, you can do that at a 'come and try' event. If you're coming, it's behind the stands of the drag strip around where the driver training center is. Cheers, Mike -
1L/min isn't all that much, enough to form a steady stream out of the hose. Doesn't blast out, but shouldn't be a trickle either. I never actually re-did the test after cleaning out the filter so can't say for sure. It does sound like you're down to the pump, but you still could have a crush or kink in a hardline that would reduce flow yet still appear to blast compressed air through. See how the new pump goes :-\

SC14 supposedly bolts up to the lower mounts on a 280zx aircon bracket but needs some sort of mod to the top mounts. Could be worth looking into. My little brother had a VS commode with an SC14 that pulled hard up to 6k, so if you get the pulley dimensions right it should be fine on an L28.

Pauly, reading over the posts I couldn't tell if you or Mick had done the Liters/minute check? I'm pretty sure the test is listed in the FSM. If I remember right, when I did it, I took the EFI hose from the inlet to the filter and put it in a 1 liter glass jar, and with the started solenoid disconnected switched the ignition to start. For me the fuel came out as slow stream full of bubbles when the strainer was clogged. If you are getting a good pressure reading which then drops off it does sound like a flow problem. Either the pump is stuffed, filters are clogged or you might even have a clog, crush or kink in a fuel line. If you've checked all the filters I'd be carefully inspecting all fuel hardlines and replacing all EFI hose. Good luck!

Hi Issac, there's some good Z guys around Brissie and I'm still yet to meet most of them. With getting a Z, just decide on a budget and go buy the first car that you fall for. Yes, it's bad advice that counters what everyone advises, yet I keep on doing it and I'm happy with my rusty resto Z's. But, I do go in looking for the major problems, and I do usually make a lower offer than my budget that reflects those problems. So many cars that look good and cost more often end up needing almost as much spent on them as the dog. Just google project Hugo by Mull and you'll see a fantastic example. Good luck with it, Mike

Great news you got it running Steve. We would have got there eventually, in a couple of months, just before pulling the whole engine apart! So the tappets being over tight meant that some of the valves were not closing fully and combustion pressure was being blown back into the manifold causing the spitting?

Has any one come across this one before? 260z 2+2 convertible in Brissie, listed on Z Car Club Qld under Buy/Sell: http://www.zcarclubq.org.au/ Nice, but then I liked the 280zx convertible in WA too -

See the separate thread in the Qld section for details of the event. It's held at the driver training center behind the Willowbank dragstrip outside Ipswich (Champions Way, Willowbank). A Motorkhana is a single vehicle timed event where you navigate a specific course around a number of flags in the shortest possible time. Runs are typically 20 - 50 seconds long and it's harder than it looks, everything happens very quickly. Motorkhanas can and are run in almost any car. I've done them in my 280zx, a little Honda City and a humungous Honda Legend Coupe. There was a family that were turning up last year in a '60s Alfa sedan with more body roll than a water bed. This year they've picked up a rough lotus clubman replica. SO COME AND HAVE A GO!!! Have a look at the animations at the bottom of this page: http://hsccq.asn.au/about.html and check out Galderdi in action: We could meet at the Orion shopping centre at Springfield and then head out? -
That helped when we were messing around didn't it, probably worth trying as short term fix. Hopefully someone with some more expertise will step in about now... You could mess with the timing but you need a timing light, should have left you the one I had, I've got another.
-
Maybe not, at least they are both now consistent :-\ I'm out of my depth here but try: 1. disconnecting and plugging the vacuum advance -> better/worse/no change 2. putting heavier oil back in the dashpots -> better/worse/no change 3. email Greg and ask him for contact details of Robyn or one of the other Z club qld guys who might know a mechanic who specializes in SUs When we checked the timing the markings were dead steady so I don't think dizzy wear is the issue. However when we checked the timing we did not disconnect the vacuum advance. It was at about 8 degrees with vacuum advance connected, so could it be badly retarded. SU Carburettor High-Performance Manual By Des Hammill states "Engines that do not have enough idle speed advance frequently 'spit back' while idling (backfire through the carburetor) and hesitate when initially accelerated, but then pick up and go." Steve, did your mechanic set the timing with the vacuum advance plugged?
-
That rear carby was definitely slower to descend and was the only one I saw spit. It's also the one Steve got a little too "creative" with when cleaning. 200grit and precision machinery doesn't mix! What qualification are you studying for again Steve, I'd get the rim as smooth as you can with 800, 1200 and 2000 grit and then metal polish, unless someone has a better idea? If that doesn't fix is then carby shop time. When are you going to Sydney? You could come around this weekend and we could try a different dashpot.
-
LOL. I have flash blindness from the light bulb going off over Stevo's head all afternoon! All I did was act as brick wall to bounce ideas off.

Cost for the day is $30 entry if you have a CAMS 2NS or higher and membership of a CAMS affiliated car club OR $30 entry + $25 day license = $55 if you are a newby. CTP extension varies from free to a few $$s depending on who you have, (ie. Suncorp is free).

Motorkhana Sunday 12 July, either to come and try or as something different for a meeting point. Galderdi, are you coming on the 12th? -
If anyone is interested in a bit of low impact motorsport fun the HSCCQ will be holding a 'Come and Try' motorkhana on 12 July. The 'come and try' events are put together so new people can have a go without the pressure to compete. There are 2 runs per course and you can have a passenger, meaning you can invite an experienced member to come along and coach. It will be held in the parking area behind the willowbank drags with scrutineering starting from 8am and entries closing at 9.30am. Runs generally start about 10.30am and go till about 3pm. Cost is $30 entry plus day membership and a day CAMS license, I'll let you know what these are when I find out (not much [Edit= $25]). You also need a CTP extension from your CTP insurer. If anyone is interested let me know and I'll send you the Sup Regs and entry forms and answer any questions. You can see Galderdi at one on youtube: I'll be there trying to figure out how to drive the z32 Mike

Well done Lurch, looks very neat in the photos Don't forget it is a 30 year old Z, not a new toyota! Half your luck!

I've seen new connectors and tails on US eBay but I would imagine an auto electrical parts specialist would have them as well, just haven't gone looking. Have walked into nissan parts and had no trouble getting speedo gear for gearbox and clutch throwout bearing. Can't remember what else, but would only have been mechanical bits.
-
Sensors might be ok, just the connections that are shot. Check the condition of the spark plugs, black and sooty -> running rich. You might not see the black smoke unless it is REALY bad. Other's with more experience might chime in here... For me, Nissan have been pretty good for parts and US eBay for anything else.
-
I'll second that! I would argue that, assuming you finish it nicely, the amount of bog used for that repair is perfectly acceptable for anything except a high dollar resto. Don't get hung up on it!
