    Motor Choices

not sure on this but i have approval in tassie for 5.7 ltr and friend in sydney has approval for 5.7 ltr also know of someone in adeliade talking to engineer about 5.7 ltr tassie doesent have weight formula but nsw does remember that you can use weight of heavist 260z or 280z to use in formula which is 1110 kg in nsw thats by 5 so works out to 5550 cc with small tolerance allowing 5669 cc but if vic is by 4 your out of luck might need to move to tassie lol mick

    Motor Choices

you really need to ask yourself what you want from your car if its a just a brighten up and go bit faster either the l28 or rb 30 would be great if your after a weekend toy and budget is pretty big rb26 is an amazing engine and power is really only limited by budget the 350 chev is a good solid base good hp potential the only problem with 350 chev i see is gearbox plenty choice for autos but 5 speed or 6 speed boxes can cost big bucks so allow for that in any calculations if your serious about 350 chev you must buy the jags that run book how to install 350 chev into 240z its like the v8 zed bible amazing book that will step u through install not real sure which i would vote for though out of the list would be rb26 if i had the budget to do it properly for a v8 i perfer the newer ls1 with 6 speed box 400 hp straight up and plenty upgrades if you want too one thing i would say is dont get caught up in cost of engine anything other than the l28 hot up i would say what ever the motor costs double it to allow for everything involve in trnasplant mick
  5. well when i finished my rebuild in 1990 i stated i stopped counting the cost after $20,000 but since then i really dont want to think how much ive spent but as ive already owned my zed 21 nearly 22 years cant see a reason to stop now just luv working on it making it my own special zed really luv what some of the gear usa companies are now making for zeds some very trick parts I fully respect anyone who takes the time to enjoy a zed and save it from the wreckers mick
  6. your puma sure looks like a nice car would have been pretty lively with sr20 turbo in it sure youd have idea of whats involved in a transplant with having done complete car build mick
  7. good luck with the JDMVH41DE im sure its a fine engine and will make a great conversion what box you planning on running behind it I have to agree a late model nissan V8 in a 240z is a great choice why not go the vh45de my reason for choosing Gen III or Ls1 which ever you want to call it is A 300 kw as u bolt it in B you can buy engineered mounting kits for it to suit 240z C the aftermarket parts for ls1 is huge anything you want to do you can buy off shelf D tuners already know how to tune computer dont need expensive aftermarket computer E After fitting Nissan v8 4.4 ltr and with no aftermarket parts anywhere I wanted an engine could buy parts for off the shelf anywhere not continually have to make my own F there is a wealth of knowledge on hybridz.org about ls1 conversion admittedly to do with Lhd good luck with the Jdmvh41de
  8. its not the big things that wear your patience and money thin its the little things must be crazy Having installed Nissan V8 and sorted out all its issues only to start again with the Ls1 but needed more power what more can i say did take 10 years to forget the headaches from the last one and start new transplant mick
  9. George's car is not running gen III engine but a 350 chev engine still not sure why georges feature article mentions ls1 I can answer most questions regarding Gen III engine as i am shortly hoping to finally finish my Gen III install Helping a fellow z owner in NSW install one in his 240z with GTO body kit I have approval in Tasmania for install and friend in Nsw has approval for install there cant help with what rules are in Victoria but know in Nsw its not as black and white as far as capacity v weight Will be offering my car story and install to Gav for feature otherwise will post pics and issues that ive come across in Gen III install Its not too hard install but does have some problems which need to be resolved to allow install in rhd car plus aussie Gen III are a little different to usa versions couple small ways Please pm if you want any further information only too happy to help in any way i can
  10. hi scando great to hear from another tasmanian Will try organise a meeting see if we can fire up some interest down here Dont worry about car being registered just meeting and looking at other zeds will give you motovation to get it on the road im sure I was all fired up to do zzz8 tour of tassie with guys from victoria but due to job change looks like ill only catch up with them on the weekend mick
  11. look good ross certainly makes some good gear i ended up sourcing adaptor plates from victoria and welding them to 28 spline stud axles but yours sure look sweet mick
  12. hi gav ill take tassie on if you like mick
  13. Gav dont forget tassie some nice zeds down here we get very annoyed when you people on the big island forget tassie still dont talk about the brisbane commonwealth games where they left us off the map of australia mick
  14. id say join local car club find out what club level events are on in your area im a great fan of motorkhanas great for developing car control , club days at race track doing sprints , and hillclimbs are top fun not actual racing car to car but you compete against the clock only cost are joining car club and cams licence plus entry fee on day usually around the $100 you will need fire extinguisher in car plus safe seat belts here in tassie we have next level of 3 day tarmac rally involving all three of the above plus navigating over long weekend great fun and $625 entry theres always drags if that float your boats about $50 licence plus $50 entry on day mick
  15. would luv to know if there anymore of those zg headlight covers avaliable mick
  16. im 6"1 no problem fitting in my 240z just luv the feeling of sitting on the floor and right over the rear axle was orginally gonna buy a rx3 mazda coupe to rebuild then got a ride in a 240z the rx3 was history after that had to have a 240z that was 20 years ago and i still have my first zed though its been modified many times since mick
  17. hi stef can you pm the final price hadnt seen thread till today sounds like a good deal so let me know once you have a total price as for adr your gonna find it damn hard to meet adr with any modification last time i had my rally car inspected by overly strict inspector was told car needed std seat belts in place to meet adr even though i had 4 pt harness fitted even told me needed to fit std radiator shroud also basically anything not fitted as per factory wont meet adr mick
  18. yeah its only good if you use it for the idea it was developed for eg racing or weekender my problem is i have two weekenders plus a road bike so suits me fine insurance drops heaps too so i can register and insure both weekenders for the cost of one and i still dont drive either the 52 days so works fine for me but wouldnt recomend it for anyone trying to cheat the system mick
  19. have to carry log book in car at all times listing speedo reading at start of day out and at end of day big fines like $2000 if caught without log book mick
  20. hi paul tough choice but id rather see another v8 zed in tassie so the 302 has my vote below is listed engineers in southern tasmania should be able to help u im up northwest coast 3hr drive from hobart so dont know any of them SOUTH Stephen Caplice Fogarty Autos 156 Argyle Street HOBART TAS 7000 Ph: 6234 8868 Geoff Davis TAFE Campbell Street HOBART TAS 7000 Ph: 6233 7361 Ron Murray 37 Elliott Road GLENORCHY TAS 7010 Ph: 6272 7910 Danny T Barrett PO Box 207 SANDY BAY TAS 7006 Ph: 0407 531 119 hope one of them can help u good luck mick
  21. we have special interest rego in tassie car needs to be over 30 years old or special reason say race or rally it works out half normal rego so on my v8 zed its $275 including what some states call 3rd party and miab limited to 52 days a year use mick
  22. hi I live in tassie so i can tell you straight from the great southern state you find tassie pretty relaxed compared to other states got my nissan v8 approved years ago no great problem just had to explain what i was doing and show brake and suspension upgrades to suit .Guy i raced was running rb30 turbo from commodore in a 240z it was plated and engineered though was a few years ago so i reckon the rb30 would be fine on my new V8 motor got approval in principle no problem same format 4 pages to fill in with details not even asking what hp new motor makes my new motor bigger capicity than your 302 so i reckon you get it approved ok Dont need to worry about dotar down here and if your car already has engineers plate on it i believe you can have it register here have to get approval from engineer been quoted $440 to $500 for engineer and plate guy i know doing same engine conversion in nsw has had to prepare a 50 page document and needs engineer on top let me know if you need any help with engineer in tassie big al at perth (near launceston that is)is the man to use .Another good thing we have in tassie is special interest rego which gives you rego for half price for special interest cars (which is mainly over 30 years over or special race or rally cars) but you can only drive them 52 days a year also reduces insurance fair bit too craig are you coming for sure this year was pretty keen on your proposed trip febuary this year but didnt happen would be keen to join you guys next year Mick
  23. hi joh yes im doing upgrade myself but keeping mum on the motor at the moment dont want george jumping in and beating me to the punch again mick
  24. i found this book to be really good actually meet author at 93 z car nationals in sydney was really nice guy was making video of z cars when in sydney but never heard of it being released since read on the net he got very disapointed with the z car clubs in usa He also did a earlier book on z cars but sold out and was never reprinted Z Car A Legend in its Own Time" by Ben Millspaugh mick
  25. well i like the v8s never got into the turbo idea only driven turbo diesels so dont really know what im missing Ive been running nissan v8 for 15 years or more currently changing to late model v8 just luv the choice in parts u have for the more main stream motors and hp is good to start with and plenty after market parts avilable and so simple to fit though im happy think ive found a way to keep th bug catcher with the efi motor kinda used to that sticking out of the bonnet and the hole makes it easy to look in engine bay mick
