zzzzed Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 I have been trying to get the right had side drive shaft back I. Chris's r200 LSD It goes most of the way in but stops around 10mm short. The right hand side has the longer spline yeh? Any tips? Or am I not hiding my tong right? Quote
dat2kman Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 And with what are you trying to get it in with? Your hands only? If they are correct, ( long vs short- i cant remember which, sorry) they do need a decent whack with a mallet or hammer onto bit f hardwood, as the circlip can be a bit stiff. Quote
zzzzed Posted December 19, 2012 Author Posted December 19, 2012 Yeh this one does not even have the circlip. On the right side there is the spline then a gap then another spline. It's like it is not meshing with the second spline Quote
dat240z Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Hey mate, Ive done the conversion your into. With the r200 its sllightly larger on one side than the stock r180 (drivers from memory). Some people can force the shaft into the r200 but it tends to weaken it (more prone to snapping under launch). Also if one side (shafts) isnt shortened a little ( i think almost 20mm ) to give it some movement. The car wont go in a straight line under accelleration, it will pull slightly to one side. I got my shaft shoftened for about $200 and its good and strong. Ive also got CVs for the future incase of more for more power for the RB25det. Check the ACT threat... I think the guy who did my shaft posted about it...... Quote
Gordo Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Holy shiver,i would be checking this out carefully ,wouldn't want to brake something , normally they just tap in. Check your left to right. Quote
zzzzed Posted December 19, 2012 Author Posted December 19, 2012 This isn't a conversion. This diff came out of this car and the shaft has been in and out more than once its just this time it won't go back in. Quote
dat2kman Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Suggest pulling the diff out, remove back cover, undo hemisphere from carrier, and have a clse inspection from inside as to what is stopping the shaft from fully engaging. The circlip may have dislodged, ( rare) and settled into the final recess, thus preventing the stub from fully engaging. Quote
zzzzed Posted December 19, 2012 Author Posted December 19, 2012 Ok diff is out and with the back plate off I can see that the shaft is trying to engage the spline on the opposite side of the diff and I don't think that is supposed to happen. It won't go in the other side because there is a washer half way up the spline where the circlip is suposed to be. So it is getting sent back to the diff shop today that asured Chris that the diff was all good Quote
dat2kman Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Oh, a "diff shop",,,, a washer where circlip goes? What the? Ask them , politely, have they done these before, or are they more used to Bogg Worming 78's out of Holdens and Falcoons!!! If the stubs are not attached to half shafts, take them with you, so they can see wot they dun! Have them make sure they do go in, after they get it right. Oh, and for all your pain, they should not be charging you any extra to "fix" their work. Quote
dat240z Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Have you tried hammering them in? Sometimes a little force can help.......... A little......... Quote
. Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Have you tried hammering them in? Sometimes a little force can help.......... A little......... I am hoping you mean hammering them into the guy at the Diff shop Quote
zzzzed Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 It's out of my hands now. Chris cam and picked it up and took it back to Adelaide to get it checked out. Did you know Chris is a big human nature fan. Quote
sco_aus Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Holy shit, could it be that dat240z said about the car pulling to one side could have been my problem all along, rather than my alignment? I will look into that. Quote
Corsa224 Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Thanks for helping with the diff today Mick "Zzzzed" it's at another diff place where the guy is rebuilding a R200 Mechanical LSD for a high HP 240z Fingers cross i may get it back tomorrow if it's a simple fix. I'll get your one direction dvd and scrap book back to you as soon as the 13yr girl next door has finished with it. She loves the way you made a collage of all the one direction band members around a picture of yourself. Quote
. Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I think this thread just took the wrong direction Quote
dat240z Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I think this thread just took the wrong direction Copy that!!! Quote
Ledge Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Hi Im guessing Richard is doing your diff then Paul Quote
Corsa224 Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Yep, sure is lol..... is yours the 240 he's rebuilding the diff for? I only spoke to paul, seemed a nice honest guy. Quote
Ledge Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 HI Yeah mate he has my diff there. The only place i would take a diff or a trans here in SA. He built the Diff and Gearbox in the Lewis engines Drift car and after 5 years of absolute hammering they still are good. Broke many GTR axles tho. Cheers Paul Quote
Corsa224 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Just got word back from the diff guys, Seems that the lsd spline was slightly out of alignment however they've noticed that i'm missing 4 bolt sleeves that secure the crown wheels, I have 2 out of the six that are meant to been there. They recommend that they get some sleeves made before putting it back togther, otherwise bad things may happen.... so no diff for Christmas. Quote
HKSZ Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I have been trying to get the right had side drive shaft back I. Chris's r200 LSD It goes most of the way in but stops around 10mm short. The right hand side has the longer spline yeh? Any tips? Or am I not hiding my tong right? I'm having this very problem Removed 3.7 open R200, fitted 4.4 HR31 lsd R200 and now the longer right shaft won't go all the way in and the shorter left shaft feels light. So I swapped left for right flange shaft and it looks a good fit. Is it that simple? opposite flanges for open or LSD Quote
dat2kman Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 It is all to do with the total depth of the hole vs the length of the shaft on the flange, AND where the circlip and circlip groove is. Use a bit of wire with a L bent onto end, measure depths, and depths to circlip/groove. As the need a pair of large screwdrivers or pry bars to sharp jerk out, they should require a block of wood and hammer to knock back in. Even the experts that change diffs over often, can get confused. Get it wrong, and the flange will still stay in, but it slides out just enough on droop/compression, to give you a lovely oil leak! Moderators Zedman240® Posted November 4, 2013 Moderators Posted November 4, 2013 When I did my open to LSD conversion, I was told by Stan Holmes to swap sides of diff output flanges..and he's never wrong! Quote
HKSZ Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Thankyou gentlemen, These are always the things you find out once the diff is oiled and fitted in the car. .....and if you ever change a diff in EH Holden there is a coarse spline and fine spline Quote
