KatoKid Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Hi all. I'm working on tidying up my wiring harness which is a big fat bastard with muchos wires and I'm looking for suggestions on the best tape to pull it together tight and that will look good and wont turn to a sticky gooey mess in a hot engine bay. Ive used some standard black electrical tape that I had lying just to do some preliminary sorting and bunching but already after a hot day in the shed on Saturday its coming undone. Ive done a bit of research and it looks like many people use cloth tape like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cloth-Wiring-Loom-Harness-Insulating-Tape-TUFF-External-/350654058577#vi-content as opposed to vinyl tape. Does anyone have any experience with this type of cloth tape or and other recommendations? Cheers. Quote
pauly_adams Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 i just use good quality eletrical tape such as nitto brand Quote
Scoota G Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 I used the nitto tape for my V8 Zed too running the wires for the coil and temp sender across the Drivers side and over the engine. Looks spot on and no issues with it going sticky. Quote
luvemfast Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 For the extent David's gone to with his build. Nitto tapes just not going to cut the mustard. Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted December 11, 2012 Moderators Posted December 11, 2012 Gidday, I have had good results with self amalgamating tape, it is far superior to standard electrical tape, not cheap though. Available at number of places, I use the Nitto brand from Jaycar Cheers PB Quote
sexual_sushi Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 What about something like techflex? It's a bit more painful to install but can be done very cleanly. I did all of my dizzy & electric fan wires in FLEXO PET and it looks pretty good, although these are just small bunches of wires. http://www.techflex.com.au/techflex-braided-sleeving-products Quote
KatoKid Posted December 11, 2012 Author Posted December 11, 2012 Techflex is definitely the way to go but I need to de-pin everything to do that so its not an option. Ive ordered some 3M Super33+ as well as some Tesa cloth tape and will try both. Ive also ordered some heat shrink as well and wondering if an electric heat gun will provide sufficient heat to shrink or do I need to buy a gas burner one ? Quote

I have a cheap GMC electric heat gun that I use for heatshrink jobs and it works just fine for me. Have used it on up to 20mm tube. Cheers PB Quote
sexual_sushi Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Yeah I have an Ozito heat gun and it's more than fine, will melt the wires if you're not careful. Let us know how you get on! Quote
KatoKid Posted December 11, 2012 Author Posted December 11, 2012 Thanks guys. Nice to know I dont need to buy anything else! Quote
