260z 2+2 leans to the right

Hi all

I seem to have the same problem as Roberto:

http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,7119.msg66191.html#msg66191

i.e. my car leans to the right as well. Am going to buy a set of PU bushes, which I need anyway but doesn't look like it will solve the problem. I'm running Koni's with std springs.

Anyone got the same problem and cracked it?

Cheers

Mine still leans to the right at the rear.  :(

All the analysis in the world might come up with a plausible reason (weight distribution, spring sag, chassis design, etc, etc), but the only decent solution is coil-overs.

Ben, do you still do complete HSD coilover setups?  Group discount? :P

That would explain why my parts car had two different springs in the rear. Haven't taken any notice of my car with two King springs the same size. Maybe I should have fitted the parts car springs instead of selling them. ???

You could try getting the springs re-set?  Take some measurements, and work out how much higher you want it to go, and speak to a local spring specialist (you might have to do a bit of search around to find someone who does it, it requires a fairly specific procedure).  The sticking point may be that you're on old standard springs, they may not be suitable for resetting.

The other option may be to put a spacer under the spring in the offending corner (side)...

Thanks guys, I do seem to recall that this issue has something to do with the spring carrier at the top of the strut, or something similar. If the suspension bloke can't find anything wrong then I might just get him to swap the L&R springs over and see what happens. If it is the spring then the car will lean to the left ....

Any thoughts on the best PU suspension kit? I'm thinking of buying one of this one:

Many cars were manufactured with slightly higher rated springs (or spacers) in the driver's side of the car to keep the car level when a driver was in it.  Is there any chance that at some stage your springs have been swapped left for right?  There is also a good chance that after 40 years of having a driver in it, the right side has settled a little.

Coil overs would fix it completely!  I have just bought kits from Ben (Otomoto) and I couldn't be happier with both the quality of the product, the price and the excellent service!!  (Ben, sorry I haven't sent my thanks earlier)

too many pies????? prev owner a real fattie????

Springs do sag over time, amongst most body parts on oung-middleage women.

Car has probably had a few bingles in its lifetime not repaired properly??? as im finding out with the car I have on a chasis jig ATM.....mmmmm

Also it is the way the motor torques.......mmmmm yes I think that might be it..........

I have also noticed it may not be springs 'All the time' I suspect it also the chassis, as I can with very little force, twist one rail up and one down on the car I have on the Jig now, with no engine crossmember in it, lower rad support removed, about 10kg force moves the whole corner of the car.....

I wonder how bad this will be with the new motor going in????? I thinks It will need a definate stiffen up, didnt think it would and was hoping it didnt either, but yup!!!

I remember stalling up my 283 chev in the 240 and it would lift the Broken LH engine mount 6" clear off the mount, so you could change it with no hoist/jack.....

think all that weight on the RH mount.......maybe twist the tin can a lil.

Seriously the Iron block and heads on the chev, only sopported by the RH mount.......The chev weighs twice the motor going back in!!!!!

check it out, measure under the rails to ground on flat surface, then measure stru tower height...

  • 11 months later...

Thought id bump this thread to see if anyone has resolved their issue of their z leaning to one side.

My 240z has brand new bushings and coilovers and inserts, running the stock isolators.

I have had my car measured up and its all square. Sectioned struts and weld-on perches measure exact from side to side with brand new tokico inserts and PU bushings. My Car leans to the right (drivers side) about 2cm measured from the sills unsure if its the front or rear corner that is the offender.

Any suggestions?

I've resolved the issue on my car. I loosened and re-tightened my control arm bolts/spindle pins etc on the rear end with the car on the ground with full load on the suspension and now it sits nice and flat. Problem was that i assembled my suspension with the car on jack stands and the bushes wern't getting the proper rotation and was holding the car up nearly an inch on one corner.
