Hi guys,

I was hoping you Sydney siders could help me out with some info.

I have some questions in relation to NSW rego. I have recently moved to Sydney from Adelaide and was thinking of bringing my 75 260z coupe over. Its rego’d in SA.

What I was wondering is how hard it is to register it in NSW. In SA things are different. Cars don’t get inspected etc. Some things I probably need to cover off are

- Lowered suspension (have king spring low)

- Muffler tip extends beyond end of car (to reduce fumes in cabin)

- 2.5” Exhaust isn’t exactly quiet but old cars are noisy.

- Has an electric fan installed.

- Has Hitachi carbs and K&N filters on them (not traditional airbox)

- No carbon canister – I don’t even know how I would install one and where the pipes go – is this an issue?

- Fresh Brakes – it has the Toyota 4 spot calipers and S13 vented discs up front, new pads.

- It has 15x7 front and 15x8 rear watanabes (I guess could put on some 14s for the purposes of passing if the 8s are an issue)

- On the front it has 15mm bolt on spacers (I am guessing these would need to go - )

- The car is rust free with the exception of the bonnet which I didn’t acid dip when I had it painted (regrettably) but I thought I should ask on this anyway to see how this is handled

- I am guessing they check all bushes for wear etc?

I guess I don’t want to drive it here and get any nasty surprises. Do you guys have a good old school mechanic who can transfer the rego from SA to NSW who understands Datsun etc? whats required?

Pedro,

The car will need a "Blue Slip" inspection this can be performed at a number of workshops all over Sydney and the inspection is cheap, check the RTA website for locations, present the car clean & tidy and they will tell if there are any issues with your modifications. From my experience if you are not a smart arxx they will be fair and reasonable. The website will also tell what other paperwork you need.

Just get ready for the CTP insurance (greenslip) bill

Good luck

I appreciate the response. thanks. sounds like it could be ok.

I guess my real issue is that i dont want to drive it all the way from adelaide, then they say:

- no big brakes without engineering certificate (even though the work was taken out by brake place- i'm guessing this doesnt matter though), cut that tailpipe down, where is your certificate for the electric fan install (clearly there is none as i did this - and very well).

I will read the literature though properly - hopefully it answers questions like above.

Cheers.

spacers are a no no, and you will need the carbon canister, the rest should be fine even the tip and the fan. as for brakes they didnt even notice mine when i got mine blue sliped all they said is gee there big brakes, i just said "yeh they are" no more question where asked

cheers all for your input. am a bit more confident now on it.

sounds like i will need to see if i can find some pics of a mounted carbon cannister. - anyone have an old cannister/piping lying around. i chucked mine out years ago. I assume the filters need replacing also.

Also trying to dig up some photos of one installed.

now to sort out a few loose ends - bonnet etc.

Something that I think is worth mentioning is that most workshops that do RWC's/pink slips/etc would nver have seen a Zed.  They wouldn't know which are genuine brakes and which are hilux/R33/etc.  They would know where and what size the original exhaust is/etc.

As long as it is clean, safe and everything works as it should and is not too far out in left field - it should pass.

Don't stress about it.  As said, it is a reasonably cheap test (about $100 down here) and they give you a list of things that need to get fixed.  Don't pre-emt what needs to be done - unless it's something that doesn't work - just get the test done and see what you need.

If you have a set of 6" rims I would fit them - that's an obvious one.

You'll have no problem if you present it clean and don't argue. The lack of charcoal canister may be an issue. I recently had to get my escort blue slipped (been off the road for 3 years). I jammed a canister into it. Plumbed the vacum line to a blank on the air box and carby and the return to tank was a hose that disappeared into my rail. It looked legit so the gentlemen didn't ask questions. I failed on non original seats.

The car car Mk2 2.0L had a non standard carby, extractors, 2.25 inch exhaust, bigger brakes, wheel spacers and 16inch RS Focus wheels (which both the spacers and wheels have since gone, I hated them), rear mounted battery. What else is illegal without a cert that it had... can't remember but he failed me on non original seats because the seats in it didn't use the original runners and didn't slide back and front. Throw in 35 year old crappy seats and it passed.

I was nice to the guy and when it came in for a recheck he didn't even crack the bonnet.

Nizmozed,

i have thought about the concept of running it on sa plates but i wonder what would happen if something were to go wrong (on the insurance front)?

eg - car was vandalised, or say stolen. Sydney is a long way from 'home' where the insurance company would have it listed as being garaged (adelaide).

Unless you continue to register the car in SA using my SA address and notify the insurance company its now gargaged in sydney. Not sure how an insurance company would feel about SA plates and garaged in NSW, but then again they might not even ask. but i am guessing they will ask about why its still on SA plates (a year or two later) if there was a insurance claim made. and possible to deny it?? that i dont know.
