warrenz Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Got the 240 back from the body shop today after 5 weeks. This is what was done:- New door skins fitted and primed, I painted them with POR15 on the inside before they went on. New dog leg rust repair panel on the passenger side and primed, once again treated with POR15 on the inside. New Hatch Panel welded in, underside and the body treated with POR15 before being welded in. Holes in hatch from spoiler fitted by PO welded up and hatch primed. Front guards primed as they were rust repaired by replacing the lower section some time ago and zinc dipped. All panels aligned ready for paint. Next up..... I will remove all glass, lights and any remaining bits and it will be delivered back to the same shop for complete respray in same silver colour Nearly there... at last Cheers Warren Quote

warrenz Posted June 27, 2007 Author Posted June 27, 2007 That thought has crossed my mind but I am banking on the fact the rust was only in some of the normal places and not that bad, but I decided on replacement repair pieces to do it properly. I hope to I can prove you wrong. Warren Quote
matt drago Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Good stuff Warren. I'm upto a similar stage, except I took all the glass out before I started repairing. I think that I found a little rust where the quarter windows go, but nothing too serious. What paint shop are you using? Quote
Toecutter Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Oh Guys now you've done it. You know that you've mentioned pulling the glass it's gonna be hard for Warren to get a good nights sleep trying not to think about the rust boogey man Can't wait to see the car back on the road mate. Did you keep the reg going all this time? Quote
warrenz Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 Hi Matt, I got the body work done at a place off Geelong Rd, Kim's Paint and Panel. He will do the paint as well. Said he did a gold 260 a few years ago! Sulio, yeah kept the rego going, figured roadworthy would be too much of a hassle. Plus I drove it to and from the repairer this time and have driven it to and from ZWorx as well for a couple of things. But it is going to and from the paint shop on a truck. I am going to keep it silver, thinking about Toyota Camry silver. Cheers Warren Quote
mikedoeslife Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Go for a deeper, darker silver. *digs into Alfadog's gallery* Quote
zedevan Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 i agree with the darker silver suggestion, but since u've had it as a light silver its probably grown on you quite a bit! i was always wanting to go the s15 grey, but this audi colour has since caught my eye, its a bit lighter and has what looks to b alot more smaller specs so looks classier having a car that needs similar body work i'm interested in knowing how much its all cost, but i'm scared to ask lol Quote
warrenz Posted July 2, 2007 Author Posted July 2, 2007 The Side quarter windows are out as wll as the from windscreen and not one spec of rust The rear window is proving a little stubborn, I do not think it has been out since it was manufactured in 1973. Rubber is brittle. Today I ordered new windscreen rubbers for front and rear from AllZparts in Sydney so can attack the rear rubber with a knife. Here are a couple of pics that I could not post before due to upload problems. Cheers Warren Quote
Add Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Don't have a pic, but the dark silver on the bmw x5's looks awsome, goes with chrome and black really well . Thats what im looking at for the 260 after im done with the cancer patient. Quote
warrenz Posted July 8, 2007 Author Posted July 8, 2007 Rear window out now and a couple of small rust spots, but no big deal. Will paint with POR. So a little more work to be done and its back to the paint shop. Warren Quote
rosco Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Hi warren. Just wanted to ask who was the guy that did the rust repair for you? I have a problem with the dog legs on my z. Spoke to a guy in oakley, and he is restoring zeds. He quoted me 2k for cutting out the dog legs and rear wheel arches on both sides. Since im just getting in the groove of restoring old cars was wandering if thats an all right price? Advice and recomendations welcome. Rosco 1971 240Z Quote
warrenz Posted September 10, 2007 Author Posted September 10, 2007 Hi The guy I used is in West Footscray, Kym's Paint and Panel. He did a lot more than that for less than the price you were quoted. But I suppled all the replacement panels which I got from AllZparts in Sydney. Cheers Warren Quote
warrenz Posted October 23, 2007 Author Posted October 23, 2007 Nearly there, should get it back this Friday, fingers crossed Warren Quote
ZD44TT Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Hi Warren, how much did the door skin cost and labour replace? Quote
warrenz Posted January 7, 2008 Author Posted January 7, 2008 Hi The door skins came from AllZParts in Sydney and were $250 each back in 2006. Hard to say what the fitting of them cost because it was rolled up with cutting out other rusted areas and welding in new rust repair sections that I supplied, repairing spoiler holes in hatch plus aligning all panels and painting doors, bare metal front guards and all other repaired areas in primer. I removed the old door skins and cleaned up the frame and coated it with POR15 as well as the inside of the door skin. If you just want the door skins fitted and the doors are already off the car I would have thought it wouldn't take a panel beater more than 2-3 hours to do that. I guess price depends on how you want it done. Warren Quote
ZD44TT Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 oh ok kool thanks.......I would have thought door skins are heaps hard to find these days. Quote
warrenz Posted January 7, 2008 Author Posted January 7, 2008 The door skins are made in Taiwan, seems to be a ready supply of them. One thing to note is that the gap around the door ends up being slightly larger than the original doors even though when I discussed this with Warren from AllZparts (as I had heard this before) he said they they had changed the pressing and they were now ok. I measured the old and the new and seemed to be same size but gaps are larger. The gaps on mine aren't too bad but the painter did build up the door edge up by the curved bit that joins the top of the fender. Warren Quote
aegean Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Taiwan seems to be the country of choice for all manufacturers. My brother has an El Camino and all the panels for that also came from Taiwan - ex US of course. Quote
