Rivnut tool - el cheapo?

I'm after a rivnut tool for my build - I anticipate no more than 100 applications - he said hopefully! I couldn't see any reasonably priced in Oz but there are $30 tools on USA eBay with $30 postage. I've previously purchased some good value sheetmetal tool in this price range (jogglers, etc) however I was just wondering if anyone has purchased these? Thanks

Mine cost me $25 I made it from a standard pop rivet gun. It is very simple to do. I have fit two sets of flares with it already and it works well. If any one wants know how to make one I will post up a short how to thred.

I got one from an aussie ebay seller when he had them on special/clearance for $40ea (sorry can't find the buyer anymore as it was over a year ago.

 

It works pretty good for the money and came with the other mandrels to fit different sized rivnuts and also came with some rivnuts as well. Sometimes it's just not worth making your own stuff unless it's just for the satisfaction of doing it or just because you can.

 

You just have to be aware to grab the correct nuts and drill bits to suit imperial sizes if they don't have metric sizes available.

But when it is as simple as it is to convert a pop rivet gun it is very worth it just for the convenience.

I got mine from ebay aus for $30, Looks to be exactly the same as the other cheapies shown. I've been putting stainless rivnuts for 6mm bbolts in the car, done about a dozen so far with no issues. Stainless are HARD to do by hand, have some spinach and channel popeye before you start    Great tool for the money!

Tim - It's more a case of where aren't they going!

 

Removable instrument panel to dash

Aluminium door cards to fibreglass doors

To secure various inner splash guards in the wheel arches - may still weld.

Secure the new cover over the hole in the boot where the tyre well was removed, and

I may line the boot area with removeable aluminium panels.

 

Basically anywhere I don't need to pop rivet or weld for structural rigidity.

With the overgrown tuffs of grass, you cant even tell where the ground meets your roller door.

Where I work we sell  rivnut tools... but we can't get as low as the ebay ones. Ours are triple that price but come with all the metric mandrels and some sample alloy rivnuts. If anyone needs some metric hole sized rivnuts, I can help with those!

 

We also have rubber nuts; imagine a rubber version of a rivnut that doesn't need a tool for installation! Just tighten the screw and you're done!

Simon, that quote of mine isn't about my name, I remember years ago at secondary school, some girl had that written in her diary...just something that brings back some good memories...I've seen about 20 combinations of my name... I'm used to it.

 

Daniel, those rubber nuts are just reusable type of rivnuts. Very strong and very corrosion proof. Made from neoprene and have brass threads. If you have something that needs to be disassembled often, and don't want to use rivnuts, these can be used.
