Does anyone run a finned diff cover on r180 or r200. Do they help keep temps lower with the extra capacity and cooling fins and how do they fit?

I've seen Perrin ones advertised and thought it could help my torsen LSD last a lot longer...

Ever thought about just modifying your own one??

How hard can it be?

Has to be easier than modiying a sump.

Lurch?

Seen plenty of short nose r200 in Sy

Via skyline late models, the moustache bar mount bolt spacing is wrong for us, it cant be modded ie drilled and tapped, as there is no "meat"where we need it.

You could try to mod a spare one, by drilling some largish say 30 mm holes, and ally weding a bit of a box, then ally weld some electronic type heat sinks on the box, increasing volume and surface area, would need to weld up a boss to take a tapped hole for tje drain.

Gotta ask, why ypu think ypu need a finned cover??

How hot do you get the diff?

We had a remote cooler using a Jabsco water puppy pump, hooked up to the bottom and top fill/drain plugs used approx 1/2 oil hose, mounted small 9 row engine oil cooler between tank qnd rear beaver panel, all protected, but,,, it would only get turned on when we new temps were up, otjerwise the pump will sieze due to high viscosity of cool oil.

This was in the rally 260Z that won the NSW State rally champs in late 1980's

I'm unsure if I do, at 4.1 final drive it wouldnt see much under 5,000 on a 15min track session. I thought the extra oil plus fins should keep it cooler, $200 is a small price to pay if it makes the torsen centre last longer as they aren't cheap.  :o

Do any of you guys run them?

The only issue is the rear brace between the control arms

Nah, long races ie 20 to 25 laps at Eastern Creek and Morgan Park, not a problem, 12 laps around PI in full race, no issue.

Off road rally use yes, the car is running all day/all night will cover 500 plus kms, hard use, so yes.

In usa the old Z race cars in SCCA racing used to run plumbed in coolers using fill and drain outlets.

For what most of us do, they are fine.

Only issue some get, it depends on oil used, the oil can foam up a bit and dribble up out the breather, if it does it will be a tiny amount, dont fret, wipe underside cean, keep going.

When get home, dump it and try another brand.

I like Castrol LSX for the clutch pack limos, othets rave about Mobil synthetic gear fluid.

Bursons/Autobarns/Repco sell a penrite  LSD additive , it stops chatter in the plates, that works well.

Save ypur money, buy stickier tures instead!

That's part of the issue, I run penrite LSD oil and I'm forever cleaning the case after races as it has oil on it. I thought it was getting hot and expanding... I removed the breather and cleaned on several occasions, but the mess continues.

I drive to all my races so trying to be fast and very reliable is my biggest goal

Penrite diff oil will foam.

Try the Castrol LSX, also, i shove into breather hole a bit of tube, then press on a short bit of hose, upright, maybe zip tie to something, and stick an old used plastic fuel filter into top of hose, sort of a small reservior, keeps everything clean underneath, simple fix.

I run one on my diff never checked diff temps but seems to work good just like the idea of extra oil cant hurt

Did have the same problem with breather forever blowing oil out so i connected a tube to the breather and now it feeds into a oil catch tank Most times when i empty it seems to be more water than oil comes out keeps the mess under control though

I did fit a arizona z car moustache bar which i welded holes up on and had new ones drilled to match cover

I'm biased but I also know the Castrol LSX is the best mineral LS oil out there , if you're worried about temps they also make a fully synthetic called SAF-XA its the gun product and used by all the V8 Supertaxi guys. You would need to check suiteability for the Torsen but it should be good, I can chase this for you if you want?

Cheers

Thanks guys, I'll get some castrol in before the car is back up and running.

I should have mentioned its an R180. What happens with the lower brace between the control arms, with a larger rear cover it will hit this?

When we were emailing Torsen a couple of years ago about my centre, they suggested to use a GL-4/GL-5 type oil, as it's not a plate type centre. I got the oil nerd in the factory I worked at to look it up and he suggested Castrol EPX 85w140, BP Hypogear 85w140 or Shell Spirax A 85w140. The guy doing up my diff kept the Shell Spirax A in stock for a Quick Tarmac rally R34 GTR he worked on, so we are going to go with this.

Might be worth a quick email to Torsen USA, they were excellent to deal with and quick to reply.
