nizm0zed Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hi all, I need a set of rear stub axles for some modifications, If anyone has some they are willing to post to me in Canberra, let me know a price. Hoping to get them reasonably soon, (within a month or 2 max) so i can mod them. Got cash waiting. Alan. (Edit) Will be travelling through Corryong, Tallangatta, Bright, Omeo, Buchan, Mallacota, Eden, Cooma in 2 weekends, if anyone along the way has something? Quote
C.A.R. Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 240Z ones? If so I have a set you can have for a site donation, Alan Quote
Jimbo Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 G,day Alan, Just a query, Bright looks to be the odd one out on your travels. Anyway would like to catch up in Omeo if you have time when your coming through. What type of vehicle will you be in...Jim Quote
nizm0zed Posted January 27, 2012 Author Posted January 27, 2012 Bright is where im staying the first night, im doing a 3 day long 1200km solo motorbike trip. lurch, whats the difference between 240z stubs and 260z stubs? I have no idea. Quote
C.A.R. Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 240 is 24 spline. Later 260 is 27 spline. The 240 ones are considered 'weaker' for track use, but on a road car they are fine. Up to you Alan Quote
nizm0zed Posted January 27, 2012 Author Posted January 27, 2012 I have a 260z with R200 in it, so i guess i need the 27 spline ones yea? however, if its the sort of thing i can swap over, i'll put them in and mod my 260 ones. Have you got just the outer stub axle? or is it both bits. Quote
Ben Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 The R200 is irrelevant. The bit that matters is that the companion flange must match the stub axle. 240Z flanges won't go onto 260Z stubs and vice versa. I highly recommend that you use the 260Z 27-spline setup. Quote
Riceburner Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 After snapping my 240z stubs I'd say definately go with the 260z type, it could save more damage/work down the track. Quote
Ben Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Gareth, What were the circumstances of the breakage? I have run 240Z stubs since I got my car (until now), but in retrospect I think I should have upgraded over a decade ago... Quote
Riceburner Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Hey Ben, I was driving on the street, took off slowly from a set of lights shifted into second and gave it a little but not heaps then 'boom, duka duka duka duka' until I rolled into the side street. Broke right at the point where the thread becomes splines, the companion flange was flying around on the end of the drive shaft. Lucky I had disc rear end otherwise the whole wheel could come of I think. I've done no more than 2-3 very small burnouts since I got the car, it's been tracked a fair bit but no standing starts so I was surprised that it happened. Just glad I was close to home. Btw, sorry for the hijack Alan. Hope it's all relevant/valuable info Quote
Ben Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 ouch... There was a web page that Eric Neyerlin did way-back-when that showed a detailed diagnosis of stub axle failures. There is one just as you describe. http://www.zparts.com/indexes/inprogress.html (you may even find some pictures of my car on his site if you look hard enough!) http://www.zparts.com/indexes/featproj_index.html Quote
Riceburner Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Yep that's exactly what it looked like. I did find that site but only while searching broken stub axles Epic build by the way, damn! Quote
nizm0zed Posted January 27, 2012 Author Posted January 27, 2012 im not too concerned if i get a 240z stub and companion, it just means i'll install that while i mod my original ones. I just cant afford to have it with the wheels off for the next few months, my schedule is getting a little tight. need the car ready for my wedding in november... Quote
