I bought this some time ago to fit into my S30 but it required modification to the rear unibody cross-member (I fitted a Holden diff instead). I believe they were fitted to the 300ZX twin turbo cars.

$50 - pickup only. Sutherland, Sydney.

hi peter

interested in the diff, what is the general condition? Also, what ratio is the unit?

Also, you mention that there needs to be some mods, what is involved?

Cheers

Ian

PS how is the build going?

Ian - I think they are 3.69 but I'll try and check and get back to you. I picked it up off eBay right at the start of the project because some guy was fitting one in the USA (HybridZ). That's 5-6 years ago now but I don't know that anyone else followed. I've never run it so I can't tell its condition but there doesn't appear to be too much backlash.

I've tried to illustrate on a photo what is involved in the cross-member modification and you can see it's pretty drastic. On top of that they are bloody heavy. I think the reality is they simply don't fit an S30.

You're welcome to drop in and have a look but I'll put it on eBay in a week or so if no one wants it. I see a wrecker in SA is asking $369 for one - tell him he's dreamin'!

I'm still spending Tuesday nights at TAFE - it's a lot cheaper now.

thanks for the info, does seem pretty major mod to make it fit....

With that sort of modification, think I would leave it go, thanks.

Tim has just finished this year doing the spray painting course, has done all but the main shell of his car now and that is scheduled for shortly after Christmas. my zed has continued on with major engine build and some other mods for the rallying. haven't had much chance for any competition recently with the business but have an early EOI on an entry on the 2014 Sydney to London Marathon....  :)

Cheers

Many people have done the conversion and I've done it as well. It definitely is not an easy bolt in swap. You can see in the pic where the subframe has to be notched out to get the diff to tuck in to the body.

$50 is a bargain and I'd snap this up in a heartbeat if you were near me. $200-300 sounds about right. You should try selling on the 300zx auz forums. But as someone said, these are pretty bulletproof so not many go bang!

Is it a road registered car, and if so, what were the engineer's comments? That was my concern and why I abandoned its use so early. I'm happy in the long run that I went with the GM diff - availability of spares, CV, etc.

You'd be better off putting a 9" under the back, the drag guys in Japan are running live axles in the quick drag Z's,

Set it up with forward links and a watts link, the forward links should have multiple fitting holes to utilise torque twist from engine.

I would need a whole custom undercarriage to fit that. it'd be ideal but I wouldn't even attempt it and don't know anybody in Perth who would. the only problems I'meing with my proposed set up is not being able to fit big drag tyres and the cvs would be the weak link. not sure what they handle but the diff being 9 1/4 inch should hold the power fine

Wanting 8 sec passes, will need at least 700 hp, no probs getting that, the r230 will def handle that, the cv's as fitted to road cars could be weak points, the later r34 or 35 cv's will go close, or, get customs made?

Other main issue is flex in the rear bushes, replace the rubber with machined Delrin(harder than nylon) to get some adjustability, offsett drill the centre holes, machine a pair of opposing flats on outer edge flanges to get say a BIG spanner on, back off clamps, spin bush, rear end toe gets adjusted etc.

To reduce rear end squat, look to get offsett strut tops ,ade to stand rear struts more upright, this reduces tendency to go neg camber under hard. You'll need wheelie bars.

Higher 60 foot times equals harder launch eqals more strain on rear end, maybe go for less 60 foot but nail it for top end!

At 9 seconds you need a cage?? I think, coming back to a live axle, you could cut through the floor and run some barring between centre cage legs, with bracing, and vertical tabs to then mount the forward links for a live axle.

I have a RX7 sports sedan that jas exactly that, however it runs very wide track with flares, so the forward links run into the main cage hoop legs, the tabs are multi holed for adjustability, it is usual sporys sedan practice. I'd be thinking you will be running inner tubbed rear end and external stock rear guards?

The draggers in Japan run at 1/4 mile strips up in the hills very remote, hard to find, they  stock body, maybe a small flare, but the quick ones ie the 9's are using live rear ends. I have some pics, somewhere, showing some of their setup, crazy little buggers!

there's a guy on hybridz that runs 9s on nos with simialr set up to what I'm after. he snapped his cv shaft after running like this for 3 years. another guy replied (that I've been in contact with) stating that he runs 10 sec and has never had a problem with cv as he ran a chromoly sleeve over them and welded them to the shaft and has had no problems to date. I'm building this car backyard as much as possible. probably everything but cage and possibly paint so live axle rear end is too expensive to pay for anf no way id tackle it myself. I have read a few people running 9s and a couple 8s on r230s so I'm gonna it that way I thinkt need an r230 and I can get started. btw I paid 100 bucks for my z body is straight no rust all original body etc. no engine though. sold it for 400 the guy then changed his mind and said I could keep the cash so I've made a profit on this project so far
