C.A.R. Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Welcome Aaron Don't take this the wrong way but steer clear of a Zed as your first car. They are old, uncomfortable, unreliable & expensive. I highly suggest you buy yourself a 5+yo manual Pulsar or Corolla & learn how to drive first. Good luck Quote

bullzed Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Welcome Aaron! I bought a Z as my first car too, I'm also on my P's! I have a 280ZX though, little different. Whilst it had a nicer ride, more advanced interior and wasn't too expensive, I decided to give it 380lb springs, took out unneeded luxuries for weight reduction and ended up spending 8 grand on it (so far), so yeah... Lurch knows all! However I would never trade my Z for anything else, whilst it's a bottomless pit for me to throw my money into, it's worth it, plus you get to know heaps of great people! Good luck! A great first car would be a 96 Corolla...it has 2 great functions; learn to drive and if you get hit or hit someone/thing else, it won't hurt as much and when you find your first zed, great for punting around chasing parts and the like. A zed is a great second car for the cruises and weekends. Quote

That's what makes us cool We are all awesome drivers and we all pranged our first cars. I'm a better driver than anyone on the forum and even I put a dent or two in my first car - and my second for that matter - shiver and my third .... and my sixth (but that one wasn't my fault!) Anyway, what Lurch was trying to say, was that start with a cheap, modern car for the first couple of years. Cheap modern cars are pretty reliable, blend in to the crowd a little (not cop bait) and are cheaper to repair and cheaper to insure. You will prang your first car. You don't want to, but you will. So get one with some decent safety features, like airbags, ABS, traction control, air-conditioning, headlights that work, hazard lights, doesn't suck exhaust gases into the cabin, side protrusion bars, crumple zones (ones that leave the passenger area in good shape), shiver maybe even decent seat belts!! Your maintenance costs will be lower, your insurance costs will be lower and while you save money you will live long enough to buy a Zed when you're a rating 1. Just for an exercise, call RACV and try and insure a Zed? I don't wish to discourage you from your Zed dreams, but I suggest that you try boring for a while. MaygZ Quote

I wasn't trying to sound overconfident or full of myself with my last comment , if that's the way it came across. Insurance wise I got quoted $1,500 a year for full comp which is about the same as a BA falcon or the likes. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted November 28, 2011 Moderators Posted November 28, 2011 I wasn't questioning your driving abilities, I was doing club sprints with my first car (260Z!) while on my L's and what the good thing was, everyone on the circuit knew what they were doing. The shyte heads on the public road was another matter. That 260Z copped a beating from these others on the road. Lets just say the only untouched panel was the roof. Most of the damage was done while I wasn't even in the car! By all means get a zed now if you can... but just be prepared. Quote

Brabham Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Avoid mediocrity and buy a Zed! Although budget wise start off with a 2+2 if you are not worried about having the 2-seater. If you buy a corolla you may end up crashing on purpose because you will be so bored you will crash just for something interesting to happen! Quote
