JJ260z Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Hi Well I'm not quite that bad........................................... Yet Im no stranger to restoring cars done a few over my time including a Mk III Supra and do all my own work on my Nissan Skyline R33 GTS-T. However due to a huge kick in the guts and a massive recession I lost my job in the UK, struggled to find work for almost two years, lost my house and self respect so took a huge gamble and emigrated here a little over 18 months ago. The Supra was sold to fund the tickets and the Skyline put in storage. Anyway had some spear cash after tax back and was looking at buying a car A 260z come up. Its not in the best of shape and I'm sure there's a lot better out there. However I'm looking to restore it................................................ I hope. Not sure if the guy I bought it off is already a member or not but the amount of spears this guy has was unreal. When I pick it up i'm taking the ute and going to fit what I can in there. So being a bit new to the country Ill be asking for some help. Ok a lot of help. If anyone wants to lead there skills some time there will be plenty of bear on tap and ill fire up the bbq just for good measure. First question I do have is I need a rear wheel bearing done but I'm confused there appears to be three types, i take they inside outside and ?? http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/mmp/nissan~260z~wheel_bearing~parts.html Second question any one recommend a decent panel beater that can deal with a few areas of rust Comments welcome and Enjoy the photos. garvice Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Hi J, You will fit in well here, only problem is even though most of us recognise our problem, none of us want to change it. Also check out hybridz.org, great site with lots of information, though a little slow lately. Then performance forums.com for general car/fabrication work but you will be called names there so don't get offended. Quote
handsandwhich Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 If you go on PF, just keep it car related at the start and try not to talk like you know it all (unless you do and can back it up). That's just my advice, not gospel. Car looks in decent nick by the photos you posted. Goodluck with the resto. Quote
garvice Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 That is on performance forums. It is party of the australian humour. Quote

No what Im talking about lol I'm lucky I'm still alive (joke) No thanks for the welcome and heads up. Anyone got any advise on the wheel bearings? Should I just take it to a garage? Or is it like the UK where they have trained monkeys and rip you off!! Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 28, 2011 Moderators Posted August 28, 2011 Welcome J, With the wheel bearings are you worried about what size or how many? There are only two in the hub carrier. Not very hard to remove but if you try it yourself, just make sure you you tap out the locking tab on the nut from the stub axle; or else when you remove the nut, you won't have a thread left and you will be searching for a new axle. You will find those type of mechanics everywhere! There is a thread on this forum called "Recomended Businesses" and hopefully you will find one close to you. Quote
JJ260z Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 Thanks zedman Yeah the size, i was just a bit confused with ref to the weblink mentions three for the rear? Im sure theres a joke there somewhere??? Thanks i did poke my head in the recommended bussines section and found a few places. Thanks Quote
Aliangus Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Good luck with the resto - it looks like a pretty solid base to start from. What's been done to the interior, besides the padded centre console and the 240 steering wheel? Quote
24 Dat Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Hi JJ260z and welcome, best of luck with the resto. Re the rear bearings, can i suggest you wait until they have been removed, then order what has been taken out, the bearings and seals are well marked on the walls of the bearings and will tell you exactly what size you need, replacing the rear bearings is a pain in the Ass, so do it once and do it properly, if the replacement bearings you buy are pregreased, degrease them and use a high quality bearing grease and repac the bearings yourself, ( i am currently using penrite sin in my race z and road z's and if you go by penrites website it should be good for high temps and longevity). I purchased a race car from SA not that long ago and i recon Grease must be very expensive down there as it was used so sparingly thru the whole car that i ended up putting at least a whole tub in uni's, grease nipples etc . There was hardly anything in the front and rear hubs at all and that is what had stuffed the bearings. You have some fantastic roads down there and they are demanding on a car so don't cop out using the minimum do it once and do it properly Cheers Dave Quote
JJ260z Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Thanks for the advise Dave Will do The Interia has full leather retrim about the only thing not done is the carpet but that isn't in bad nick either The worst thing about it is the rust on the bottom of the drivers side rear wheel arch and the back boot slam panel is completely fubard. Hope I haven't taken on to much of a big deal. Already had a few people willing to offer there help. Anything Mechanically wrong I can fix however body work I'm ok ish. Quote
