BobsYourUncle Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I know this is a broad topic, but I'd like to try to gauge opinion on the various fuel delivery system options. I've got a set of DHLA40s ready to go, but I'm looking at using my car as a daily, so I'm starting to question whether I'd be better off either staying with SUs, or going to injection. For a daily drive (that's still fun), what would everyone go for? SUs are simple (especially the early 240z type). Some people say triples, once set up right, don't need much attention, and should give a bit more performance. I guess injection is the lowest maintenance, but more complicated in terms of doing the work yourself, and as I understand it performance really depends on your budget. Thoughts? Quote
260Coupe Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Boy what a can of worms ! I have Triple Mikuni 44's on my Zed and they were dyno tuned and set up precisely a few years back and I have not touched them since (and do not expect to for many years to come), performance is as smooth as injection and the Zed could easily be used as a daily (although fuel economy would not be as good as injection). I also have twin Mikuni 44's on my Sports 2000 track car and these have not required any tuning, tweeking or fiddling for over 10 years. I can only comment on Mikuni's as these are my carb of choice . I would suggest your budget would be a major factor with what your induction system options are. Alan Quote
luvemfast Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Another +1 for Mikuni's Peter Mac dyno'd an engine with triple Mikuni's last week. From his experience, told me it was like it had fuel injection. But again, I am biased Quote
260Coupe Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 They were my old Mikuni 44's off my old 240z race car !..........the carbs I should never have sold when I sold the 240 :'( Quote
Six_Shooter Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Have you ever noticed how some people will say "These carbs are so good, it's almost like having injection...." Just go injection, it can be done inexpensively and work very well. Quote
zzzzed Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Have you ever noticed how some people will say "These carbs are so good, it's almost like having injection...." Just go injection, it can be done inexpensively and work very well. Yep key word is almost. Itb injection FTW if you can afford it Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 26, 2011 Moderators Posted July 26, 2011 +1 with the EFI. It's really not that hard to setup and wire up yourself. If you can setup a set of triple carbs, throttle bodies are almost the same. If you can source some parts second hand and some new, you can save quite a bit of cash for that "set and forget" setup of EFI. It really depends on budget as well. I've setup my last two zeds with the same setup and probably wont go back to carbs if I can help it.. Quote
BobsYourUncle Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 I've spent around $1200-$1500 on my triples (emission-style DHLAs). I wouldn't have though an ITB setup could be had for less than double that. Quote
luvemfast Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I'm a toolmaker by trade though, so love mechanical stuff. Theres something romantic about triple Mikuni's to me. If anyone needs me, I'm in my garage, having some alone time "tuning" my carbs Quote
Scoota G Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I use my Zed as a daily and get better economy with Triples 45 Dellortos than i ever did with my old round tops. The only problem is that there is more temptation to open the throttle and hear the triples. Quote
chris240 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 stick with the tripples. no ifs or buts. real men have tripples Quote
peter mc Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Have to say triple mikunis are very good they are so good i think i may get some for the NC28 .The 44s we tryed on the dyno last week were as good as injection from 2000 all the way to 8000 at full throttle even at part throttle they were great ,throttle responce was incredable with the 44s the 40s were not as good, they were not meant for a L28 with the setup we had, would be fine on a stock one .280hp from 44s with37mm chokes, 260hp from 40s with36mm chokes and the noise arrr the noise Quote
peter t Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I am wimping out and going with the four barrel Holly set up. Had a two barrel Holly on a 1200 and gave no trouble all the time I had the car. Quote
BobsYourUncle Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Still having problems with the SUs? Quote
