Scoota G Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I couldn't figure if it's a manual or not? If it's an auto replace the modulator on the transmission. Test it by disconnecting the vacuum line and see if it still blows smoke. Quote
reverendzed Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Thanks guys, yep I was thinking rings at least... :'( Quote
MaygZ Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 It could be as simple as valve stem seals??? Have you replaced the oil and filter? I'm guessing it would be one of the first things you did. Try going to a heavier (thicker - maybe 50 or 60) grade of oil - even an oil modifier like one from STP. It may help in the short term. There is also a chance that it is oil that has seeped into a cylinder while it sat and was absorbed by the coke on the top of the piston or even oil that has been pushed into the exhaust?? How long have you run it? I suppose if you have given it a good run, say over an hour, that would discount the oil in the exhaust. I'm looking for a silver lining. I still miss you MaygZ Quote
benny Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 sea foam it papa!! seems to be all the rage over there!! Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted June 18, 2011 Administrators Posted June 18, 2011 It could be as simple as valve stem seals??? My car sat for a couple of years and it hardened the valve stem seals causing them to allow oil into the combustion chamber. It would foul the spark plugs and everything. When I replaced them which is a PITA to do when the engine head is still on the motor the car ran a lot better. sea foam it papa!! seems to be all the rage over there!! Sea foam is popular with the rotary guys, it helps de-coke an engine and clear out the carbon. If your car has been getting lots of oil into the combustion chamber or fouling up the spark plugs often it could have lots of carbon build up which would make it run poorly. If I'm honest from your description it sounds like you could be in for tearing down the block and replacing the rings, but definitely do a compression test first and see how you go. Quote
benny Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 heres the link - http://www.seafoamsales.com/ youtube it theres some funny stuff!! Quote

AussieZed Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Hey Rev, Seafoam was enough to fix my old Nissan when I lived in Canada - went from smoking like a train to running clean in two applications! So def worth a shot before you start pulling the engine to bits.... Ross Quote
reverendzed Posted June 25, 2011 Author Posted June 25, 2011 Well it's update time! found out that I need a new set of carbs (one 4 screw and one 3 screw with a really bad float) so hopeful to get hat organised this week, hopefully have fixed the brake problem still need to bleed the rears, and then with my seafoam and 3 inline fuel filters will hopefully get it running properly! Stivva Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 Car looks great Dave. Its a great start for a new project. The engine bay looks quite tidy as well, would love to see a few more photos of this beast. Quote
