Thoughts on a Z31 race car

What do u think? im looking at a few options at present and a Z31 is on the list, anyone had experience with them? Are after market parts readily available, seen them coming up cheap (stock), maybe a RB engine change. Thoughts? ideas?

RB engine change - is simple in the Z31 as Nissan made a Z31 fitted with on - a RB20DET for the JDM (the Z31 200ZR) - so you can still get for the right $$, the original sump/oil pick and engine mounts from Nissan etc.

 

Do it find a 2 seater body = lighter (non targa top)

Do you know which events you would race in? I say this because a lot of race series will only allow cars with original engines.

that being said, if you were to make it a 200ZR perhaps it would be allowed. So my advice would be to find out the regulations for the races you want to compete in and build to their standards.

 

But i like the idea, its an uncommon thing to see racing (well that I have seen anyway) and with a few mods those cars can look really nice.

class wise im fine, to start with it will be just sprints etc, but later ill log book as either a 2A or maybe even in sports sedans which has opened rules and u can now run such cars.

I am building, but im just getting things stronger so that i trust them, before I get to the point of full on racing. Im just going to do hill climbs and circuit open days in the mean time to practice.

some 200zr's look dam sexy, although once you see the 2 seater version the 4 seater looks ugly, just like any other zed

there's that blue z31 with custom watanabes that looks sexy, and has had the rear bumper taken off and shaved, and theres a black on in japan that looks nice, however since formatting my comp i can't find anything lol.

Seems to me that the main goal for any race car is to get it as light as is possible. If you're particularly attached to a Z31, then thats that. But if you're not, there are plenty of other cars (coughS30cough) that are lighter to start with, and better equipped to run an inline 6.

whats an S30? and no my heart is not set on a Z31, i do love Z's and miss my 260, but i think doing another 240/260 is not the best way to go now that im starting again. i love Z32's but i dont like the engine and of course they are very heavy. top of my list at the moment is a S13, followed by a R33. Z31/ RX7 are also on the list but both would need engine changes (to a RB25DET)

Why on earth would you change a rotary to a RB25DET?

LOLL well i know nothing of rotos, and would want to be able to do eng work myself to a point, so no rotos. I have heard i may be shot by Roto fanatics if i do this but ill take my chances.. :roll: :lol:

Very regular oil changes an oil cooler or 2 and you have a reliable crazy reving monster. A friend of mine has a 13BT in a old school 323 (rwd) and with a set of slicks (has a locked diff) it pulls 11second quaters on stock boost and engine. Only other thing it has is a microtech on a safe tune.

does anyone know is Z31 and Z32 coilover are the same, no one seems to make Z31 adj coilovers, but they all have Z32, i wonder how close thay are??

definately different.

 

the z31 struts resemble the datsun nissan type, where the z32 are more like the newer skylines and sylvias etc.

 

you can modify the z31 strut to use coilovers much like the s30 Z and other early datsuns/nissans

I have heard that much like the R31, you can use Silvia suspension, with mild changes, but im not sure.
