I've seen three 1973 240Z Sports and all of them had the word auto on the compliance plate.  Don't know about other models.

That must be an Ozzie ADR thing - Nissan never put it there.

also the auto's had the badge on the back of the hatch, so there "should" in theory be 2 small holes for the pins....somewhere under numerous re-sprays no doubt  :P

Well that is not a stock Nissan tag - that will be why never seen one before - but then most zed I have owned have not been Oz zed but NZ or UK export models.

These are the only factory ID tags so that must be some Oz ADR thing.

Here is a better image. In addition to the standard plate posted by NZeder, there is also a silver foil decal, which is no longer readable, however I can see the outline of Nissan Motor Co at the bottom. No idea what this decal was for.

Don't be confused between Local delivery Compliance Plates and Factory ID Plates.

They where located in different places in different markets and fitted in that market to prove that the vehicle was approved for use by the design rules of the day.

For instance in the US the Plate was located in the door arch, whilst the Aust Plate was on the firewall.

Not sure where the UK & NZ plate was located, NZzedder can enlighten us on that. :)

factory ones only no other compliance plate required for NZ.....that is what has me so confused as Nissan never put an ID plate on the car that stated it was an Auto or a Manual.

The australian compliance plate identified the requirements that had to be met for sale in this country

ie 4A-seat belts

    10B -steering columns

all those numbers had to be fulfilled for a vechicle to be sold in australia at the point of sale for vechicle standards (any vechicle)

All those numbers can be found on the net ,so try Australian Design Rules 10B

That is why the compliance plate is required for registartion as it complied with the rules of the day.

Aegean you asked about the seat belt dates 4A defines what this vechicle had when available for sale

Factory plates never defined this even though they changed model design without indication

Cheers

No. I have seen the same sort of decal on US cars. As mentioned, it has Nissan Motor Co at the bottom, and if you get the right light, you can faintly see three circles on the left running vertically with a large "E" and a smaller letter or number beside it.

I have no idea.

But...something in that shot strikes me as odd.

The placement of the labels/plate.

In all the zeds I've owned, the compliance plate was on the firewall.

The factory plate was placed on the strut tower, in the same position as the "mystery" decal.

Opens up a can of worms, original placement of plates/decals/labels..

My guess would be the a factory Emission decal. This would have timing info on it etc. It could have also be the info on the coolant to run - but with it so faded who knows.

Example of some of the many decal see here

http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/SE11

But this would be my best guess at what is was like - but Oz spec related not US like this example.

Again I have not seen any of these type of decal on NZ new zed - we did not have any emission standard back then so none of this warning...meets this and that stuff was required. You purchased a sports car - and burnt up petrol. I guess these decals were the beginning of PC world we live in these days where everything has to be labelled and you know it meets standard x and y blah blah.....

What happened to just driving a car :(

anyway back on topic...

Yeah, it's anyone's guess as to what it might have been. I will keep looking at it in various light conditions to see what it said. Might get lucky. None of the US decals on that page are like it.

Not surprised really - different market, different legal requirements, also different division of Nissan etc. So US decals made in US for US, OZ made in OZ for OZ (ie that ADR plate you guys have that we don't have or need - well back in the 70-80's)

The location of the Datsun and Compliance plates in 1974 was the same on all the ones I have seen. In 1975, the Datsun plate changed to the left strut tower. Not sure where the compliance plate was located.
