24Ozed Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Hi Guys, I've bought a 260z thats got a few issues that i'm trying to iron out. One of them being that the brake lights don't work. Well i've found the source of the problem, and that is that there is no brake light switch screwed into the pedal box mounting. So i've borrowed one off my 240z and set about intstalling it. Problem being that there sholuld be 2 wires with female bullet connectors floating around somewhere to plug the switch into .. but there isn't. Can someone tell me what are the two wires that go into this switch? (Colours?) And what part of the loom they come off.. Even a picture might help !. Thanks in advance ! Quote
handsandwhich Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Is this the part you speak of? Both wires are black on mine. It goes up into the dash, will try to get the matching pic for you. Quote
gilltech Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Both wires are black on my '74 car loom & also same on my spare loom; the female plug connections are a branch of the underdash loom & should be up under the dash somewhere & not too far away as the branch loom is not very long. Has some PO rigged up some other system to activate the brake lights? Can't imagine why anyone would though. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted September 16, 2010 Moderators Posted September 16, 2010 Wires for the brake light switch are black/yellow stripe and come out from the loom for the steering column (wipers/lights/indicators etc). Short with bullet type plugs. Quote
24Ozed Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 Thanks for your help all !. To be honest i don't know what the deal is... there is a thread for the pictured switch but its blanked off at the back. (so the switch can't poke through) Is there another system for detecting braking on a 76 260z? as i can't see any other spots for switches. Anyway... i've wired up the switch ive got and the brake lights are working.. ive just got to drill out the hole on the weekend and install the switch... This car is throwing a few surprises at me thats for sure ! It had a lot of wiring work done to take the l28e.. and has battery relocation, battery isolation switch, old defunct alarm wired up etc... headlights appear to be stuck on high beams and can't switch to low beams.. i think thats going to take a replacement stalk. There is a bit to work out still from here. Wish me luck ! Quote
gilltech Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Some brands of cars have brake light switches mounted on & activated at the brake reservoir itself rather than by the pedal - has your car got a reservoir transplant perhaps? Even then, I can't see the point of deleting the Datsun one, very strange. Quote
sco_aus Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 My '77 260Z 2 seater has a green wire with yellow stripe.. I'm having big dramas with mine atm... Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 16, 2011 Moderators Posted January 16, 2011 No lights at all? Whats the problem? Quote
sco_aus Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Me? No brake lights. But I just confirmed it is 12 volts for the brake lights, so I'll just rewire it. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 16, 2011 Moderators Posted January 16, 2011 Check for 12V at the brakes switch and just bypass the switch and check if all the brake lights light up. If no 12V at the switch, check fuse/holder and fusible links. Quote
sco_aus Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 We had 12V, then it just disappeared. So I would prefer to rewire it so i can trust it, though, after looking up under the dash, im thinking, im going to rewire the lot with a new fuse panel (blade fuses) and easier to access, but my car isnt at all normal...
