acf321 Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Hello again ,,, i'm using a 260Z 5 speed box on my 71 240Z and I have a problem that the shifter is too far forward, given the shifter is a relatively straight 240Z unit. In a word, I need the correct shifter, so that the shifter is about 1.5" back of its current location. When the car is in 1, 3 and 5th gear, i hit my knuckles on the dash fascia. SO... from this photo, can anyone identify the correct shifter that I need, so my gear knob moves back to the correct position??? This photo was taken by a supplier offshore that has these items to choose from. Cheers Adam Quote
Riceburner Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I run a 260z 5spd in my 73 240z and had the same problem. My shifter had to be cut approx 1 inch above pin, then welded at 90deg going backwards with a 3 inch long piece, then welded again at 90deg with a straight piece going vertical. So none of those seem like they would fit to me :-\ Quote
C.A.R. Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Because the shifter mechanism is further FORWARD on a 260Z box, compaired t a 240Z gearbox you will have this problem. If you want to retain the centre console, you WILL have to drastically modify the shifter to work with the 240Z centre console & 260Z gearbox. Quote
Scoota G Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 HA! The photo look like one of those Evolution of Man / Darwin Theory Pictures Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted June 11, 2010 Moderators Posted June 11, 2010 Only way to do it is with an oxy/acetylene torch, vise and brute force... I'd probably use the last one and you have to firstly heat up the section right above where the pin goes through and bend it back slightly more than 90' back onto itself. Then about an inch on heat it up again to red hot and bend it back straight up. I'll find a pic for you... Quote
maddos Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Well if it's only your knuckles fowling and not the shifter, why not just go the first one? Quote
dazzed Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 umm just in interest Adam how come you have so many shifters, and do you want to separate with one or two? Quote
