reverendzed Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Hey guys, had an interesting morning driving my son to the train station! I had to get beyond some traffic so I really wound it out in 1st gear and then as i went to change into second it didn't want to come out of first. When i decelerate quickly there is a 'clunk' noise and it's only then that I can get it out of first gear. All other gears seem O.K. When the car is turned off, if I put it into first it is still stuck! any ideas? could it be clutch related or as I suspect something in the box has let go? Rev. Quote
C.A.R. Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Selector fork moved out of it's grove in the shaft? Either way mate, it's an gearbox out & strip-down job... Quote
260Coupe Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Rev If it was clutch related I would suggest that you would have the same problem in all gears. It sounds like it is the 1st gear selector fork that may have sheared a roll pin causing the release fork to travel too far (or not at all as it will slide on the shift rod). I had a similar problem with first gear years ago in my Stanza SSS (with the option 1 shift pattern box), on dissassembly I found the nut holding on the main cluster had come lose causing the intire main cluster to float around. Either way it sounds like removal and refresh is required Here is my box I refreshed the other day with new bearing kit, seals, two new synchros rings and new synchro sleeves (prior to reinstalling the shift forks) BTW A keen eye my be able to spot the "lubricant in a can" used to assist with assembly Alan Quote
C.A.R. Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Woops - typo on my part. I hadn't had my morning coffee when I typed the reply... Quote

reverendzed Posted March 13, 2009 Author Posted March 13, 2009 Thanks to a very tall gentlemen with a huge smile we were able to wrestle the old gearbox out and replace it with a 280ZX box which seems to be running very smooth! now to get the old one fixed! ready for the other Zed i'm building. Interesting that when we drained the oil from the 260 box it had some rather big bits of metal flow out....that can't be good! anyhow thanks Lurch you're a rare breed these days bro! Rev. Quote
Michael Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Wink* Told ya there was a reason for me holding onto that box, Anyway enjoy mate Quote
Bruce Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 hey Rev, is there a noticeable difference in the shift on the 280zx box compared to the original? cheers Bruce Quote
C.A.R. Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Yep. Shift is much more positive with the 280ZX box - & I have NFI why? Quote
reverendzed Posted March 13, 2009 Author Posted March 13, 2009 Yeah...what Lurchos said, but the other weird thing is that I feel that I have more grunt taking off from a standing start, I felt it used to 'bog' down a bit, but yesterday when I took it for a good spin it 'seemed' to perform better! Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 13, 2009 Moderators Posted March 13, 2009 That's due to the 260's 2.9:1 first gear and the 280's 3.2:1 first. The rest of the gears are pretty close. Perfect for the red light drags. Let me know Rev if you want Stan to look at your 260 box. Quote
reverendzed Posted March 13, 2009 Author Posted March 13, 2009 Demetri if you could find out if Stan can look at it because I need it for my other build. thanks Rev. Quote
