Tutorial: SR/CA Gearbox onto L-series engine

Hi All,

Good news I now have the bell housing off, I ended up breaking the seal by forcing in an window scraper blade.

1) As I have no shifter does anyone have a recommendation for a short shifter for the RB20 gearbox?

2) Any recommendations for the machining on the L series bell housing in Melbourne?

Thanks Blue Z

I have a complete short shift assy for RB box. (1 only)

Has anyone used an RB30DE Gearbox out of a VL Commodore. I believe the RB30DET boxes are completely different (MX7) however I'm pretty sure the standard RB30DE boxes are 71C based. They are a little easier to source when compared to RB20 Boxes and may be stronger?

Cheers

Andrew

Seem to remember reading somewhere you get shifter issues because the engine leans the other way? Or doesn't lean at all

RB20det & RB30e are the same gearbox - 71C mid length unit.
Suitable for late 240Z, 260Z & 2+2, and 280ZX
You will still have to fit the L bellhousing, and modify the gearbox crossmember as these units have the mounting point on the gearbox further rearwards.

The tailshaft will bolt in without modification.

If you have a early 240Z which would have been originally fitted with a 71a gearbox, you'll have to use the longer S13/S14 71C unit, with a modified crossmember & suitable length tailshaft.

The RB30det gearbox - the MX7 - is physically larger and completely different. It won't bolt up unless you cut & shut the bellhousing...
