scotta Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 I am going to bring my 1972 Fairlady Z into Au from the US. (It is JDM car with fender mirrors) I have been told I will need to have the vehicle inspected by an engineer and it will need to meet Australian design rules in place at the time of the build. The list included; Rear view mirrors, the RHS mirror has to be adjustable from the drivers seat (electric mirror or on drivers door) – manual mirror on front guard not legal. Anyone running fender mirrors? How did you go getting around this requirement? My fall back is to 3d model and print a version that looks like the originals but incorporates a power mirror motor assembly. (I'm working through the required asbestos testing required prior to shipping and will share my learnings and experience later). Quote
theremm Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 I have genuine fender mirrors installed on 73 240z, although they are not original to the vehicle. I put them on myself when I bought the car, and didn't have any problems getting a roadworthy certificate in Queensland. Not sure about other states though. Quote

I've heard that there are more restrictions in Vic relative to Qld. Quote
KatoKid Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 This will be hits and miss and totally dependent on the people involved and their opinions. I got my 4/71 240Z engineered and registered 12 months ago and it flew through with no one baulking at the original JDM mirrors ....but I had done my homework and was ready to fight the battle if needs be. First link provides background and some dates on ADR's: https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/design/ Second link provides more details and specific ADR's: https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/design/second_edition_adrs.aspx Here is the relevant mirror ADR but it didn't come into effect until Jan 1972: https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/design/files/14.pdf Good luck! Cozza Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 I’m interested in the issues around asbestos. After watching the MCM videos with their S30 JDM import. they often mentioned they would have liked to have kept the original donk if it wasn’t for the gaskets containing asbestos. i wondered why they wouldn’t have just stripped the motor to individual components and put it in the boot for reassembly in Australia. maybe in their case, they never actually intended on keeping the original motor but, I figure it’s an option for some one that is serious about keeping the original motor. good luck and I look forward to hearing your experience. KatoKid Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 There are agents in Japan that you can engage to certify that the car is asbestos free and this is accepted by Aus authorities and stops them digging further when the car arrives here. Cant find the link but it isn't overly expensive. Quote

TOO60Z Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 MCM fed us the asbestos line because they knew it would cause debate over the engine swap and brake upgrades with purists. It was an easy out for them. They were going to mod it as that's what they do and what the plebs want to see. Low km engines front and half cuts come in by the container load and i'm sure none are put through the wringer the same as a single car enthusiast with his pride and joy. gav240z and theremm 1 1 Quote
Cozza Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Yep, I reckon your right on both accounts. lets hope it goes smoothly for the op. Quote
TOO60Z Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Do something different. Turn your car into ADM spec. Fender mirrors are so passé. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted December 12, 2018 Administrators Posted December 12, 2018 Asbestos issues can be dealt with, but you need to have the car certified by a recognised company before shipping. Should all go smoothly then, just a case of more money from your pocket into hands of third parties. In my opinion it's dumb, we could create jobs with this policy, by impounding cars upon import. Having local workers inspect and remove asbestos items (as required) etc.. they could stitch up the whole racquet / easy money for Government etc.. Quote
PZG302 Posted December 12, 2018 Posted December 12, 2018 No id wouldn't Gav, with the current policy of privatisation, you would see costs spiral out of control with no return and even more woeful service than what Border Farce could provide. Just look at what is happening with the outsourcing of visas by the government, two potential providers, both with ties to pollies and to line their pockets. And look at the services and cost increases by those few countries that have privatised these services, for the worse. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted December 12, 2018 Administrators Posted December 12, 2018 Sorry I forgot to think like a Politician. :). You're absolutely correct. After a few years we could have an inquiry into what went wrong, nobody will be punished. Just a few harsh words thrown in their direction. The head of the regulator over seeing it all will resign and be offered a new job in the private sector of the same industry they once regulated. Quote
