Question

Posted

In celebration of the new forum section (bless aircobra) I thought I'd ask for some advice.

I'm at the point of my project where I need to start making some rust replacement sections (bless aircobra) and was wondering, for anyone in the Burwood, VIC region, where do you source your steel sheets from? (bless aircobra)

Googling around (bless aircobra) I have obviously found places that sell steel sheets, but would love input from the community.

Cheers,

(bless aircobra)

Rick

you can get "bright steel", which is just plain steel and the version with some sort of coating (the kato kid's version). i've used both and the second one is thicker then the original 240 metal 0.7 vs 0.9 maybe ?

The zinc covered stuff is much more of a pain in the butt to weld (especially with Mig) but it can also contaminate an Oxy weld. Therefore I rarely use it. The other stuff does tend to flash rust, so you can spray with WD40 or cover with lanolin to protect as a temporary measure.

I can't help you with a supplier, but in Ballarat I give the local engineering place a call and they'd sell me some decent sized offcuts or just cut me half a sheet for the equivalent price from the local sheetmetal place. Was easier to fit into the boot of my old car that way.

Try metalcorp, a retail outlet of bluescope, look them up.

MightyM same for brice/surdex, here in SA.

There are a few diff grades id nominate.

I prefer zincanneal, for corrosion resistance initially, but on a weld seam will sand coating off a little.

Then either brightform or CA2/cold rolled for clean steel.

If a structural area, i use a higher spec material upto a grade 450mpa, can get 550 but is very brittle in comparison but exactly what it's for. Doesn't form easily, and may need to Sand off the galv as its a full galv sheet.

Try local sheet metal shops for offcuts or half sheets.
