Hempshall Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 I have a 1980 280zx which just blew a head gasket. Should I ask the workshop to remove the entire engine assembly or just go with removal of the cylinder head and recondition that alone? If anyone has indicative figures on the cost of a) a cylinder head recon b) an entire engine overhaul That might indicate a way forward. Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted August 17, 2017 Moderators Posted August 17, 2017 Hi That would depend on the condition of the rest of the motor. How many Ks has done? Was it using oil ? Was it excessively noisey ? If the bottom end is solid and this is a just a road I would do the head only. Cost of the cylinder head work will somewhat depend on what is wrong with it. Cheers PB Quote
Hempshall Posted August 17, 2017 Author Posted August 17, 2017 The engine is at 285,000km. The engine doesn't burn oil. The engine noise is (or was) low. I'm not sure how much damage the overheating did when the head gasket blew. I will definitely getting the cylinder head re-worked. Quote
Yamahacam Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 I had a leaking head gasket but had not overheated. Got 2 or three coolant passages repaired and the head skimmed. From memory I supplied them a bare head and reassembled it myself? I am a tight arse so this is probably the case. Remember it cost $260 about 2 or 3 years ago. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 18, 2017 Administrators Posted August 18, 2017 To do a full rebuild will cost $5k or more properly done etc.. I would personally just sort the head out if the motor ran fine previously, if you want to do other work in terms of performance different story. Quote
peter t Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 Got a L28 in the shed reconed. New bearings, rings ,gaskets bolts, head job. Parts from SWM. Cost about $5k. Do you want to buy it? Quote
