I thought it was worth sharing here.

If you can be bothered reading it all.

The 25 year rule is going to make certain marques much more expensive when you consider you'll be competing with North American's on them. Think R32 GTRs etc..

I know in Japan finding a good condition older model FD RX-7 is getting very hard right now. I was thinking that relaxation of the rules would see a decline in their values over here. But this new legislation looks set to only increase their values!

I just don't understand how they can get this policy so backwards, considering we have no car industry to protect anymore, but then again it's Canberra, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised?

Hi Gav

On the surface it would indeed seem that the policy is backwards, wrong or just doesn't make sense.

There is a lot more to this policy decision than just protection for the local car manufacturing.

Probably a good one to discus over a beer one day.

Cheers

Sounds like an interesting chat.

I now understand why there is so many people movers being sold through Dealers on Parramatta Rd though!

The two articles Gav has linked are of course written by someone who has a particular interest which he is going to defend. Only read them quickly but the 25 year rule seems reasonable to me, saying we will face competition from the US therefore it fails is a bit of a knee jerk reaction. I'd question how much demand there is in the US for right hand drive cars for a start. Which side the drive is seems like a significant problem to me as far as importing goes yet is something out of Govco control. And there must be a heap of market forces at work outside Australia concerning availability and prices too.

PB; Do vechicle importers need to provide proof of purchase price in Japan to the government.

Perhaps the government wants to clamp down on washing dirty (undeclared) money through these businesses.

Or are there other lobby's at force here....perhaps car companies already in the market trying to protect share in an already competitive new car market?

Hi,

- I don't believe they have to provide proof of purchase, but am not sure.

- Plenty of lobby groups in this one and on both sides, not just the FCAI

The cost of cars won't go up due to the 25 year rolling rule. The cost of desirable cars may go up in Australia, due to demand fromwithin Australia, but we are still a very small market, as is the US market for imports from Japan.

I'm not sure if there will actually be an affect on the cars we would be interested in. As I read it, the main vehicles that will be stopped will be the dodgy camper van back to people mover swaps that were already pretty grey.

And are there any unbutchered R32's left any ways? ???  The ones that are in good original condition are already drug money prices anyways.....

Personally, I don't think much will change the market much aside from the dodgy people mover/camper van. The import market is reasonably small in the scheme of things. Most of the desirable cars will still comply, and the rolling 25 year age will bring more cras into eligibility.

But nothing changes for race cars, so all good there......
