C.A.R. Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I've decided to start a proper thread on my car, rather then adding to the 'bodywork' thread on the car. Anyway, I bought the car as a unrego'd wreck about 7-8 years ago from a family man in Melton. I then set about getting it to RWC then driving it as a daily for the next couple of years, & using in club sprints & hillclimbs. I also took out the GCC 'Sports Car' class in 2002 18 months or so before DatNats '07 I decided the bodywork really needed some serious attention. The thread detailed here is all about how I went about de-rusting it...: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,670.0.html The car specs are very mild: L28 with a mild cam, 10.3:1CR, 240Z SU's & Headders. Rebulilt 5-speed box. 3.9 R180 diff with a slip limiter fitted. Lowered on King springs & re-oiled factory dampers. Front Brakes: Hilux/4Runner S12W Iron 4-spot calipers & S13 Rotors. Std pads. Rears Brakes: are 280ZX discs. 280ZX 15/16" (23mm) Master Cylinder. Question & comments welcome (This post will be updated when I CBF ) Quote
Glen Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 hmmmm turbo goodness, are you using factory ecu or a aftermarket one? Would be pretty straight forward if you have all the stock injectors, ecu, turbo, clutch etc etc I turbeod a car but i went with a microtech, everything can get costly then. Quote
pauly_adams Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 small question where did you get the turbo manifold ? and can i have it please lol just joking. i was thinking of turbo or supercharging down the track but im swaying more too using a sc14 supercharge due to cost. also did you get a turbo wireing loom and how much was the lot if you dont mind me asking cheers pauly Quote
Add Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Hi, Glad to see a 2+2 restoration in the projects thread. I dont feel so bad restoring a 2+2 now. Adam Quote
C.A.R. Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 Cheers guys. Nothing wrong with the 2+2's - I like em because I'm a tall bugger & they have more headroom Lets just say the only parts that will be factory in the turbo conversion will be the manifolds... (Pauly, I procured the Turbo Manifold ex Japan. I wouldn't touch a SC14 if my life depended on it - even if I had a toight budget. PM 'Thehelix112' about what he thought of his SC setup.) Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 16, 2008 Moderators Posted March 16, 2008 Out of curiosity, what inlet manifold are you going to use? If you can get your hands on a turbo inlet manifold that would be great! What about ECU? Should be a killer Zed when your done! looks brilliant! I'm about 6ft and the way I fit in my 240 is to have the seat mounted real low..... but my helmet just touches the roof dammit Quote
C.A.R. Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 Dimitri, I'm going to use the 280ZX NA EFi Manifold. I got it for SFA. I may modify the back of the plenum to remove the 'step' in it, but I'll have a look at it when the time comes. ECU will be a one thing I won't be skimping on... Quote

620Z Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Nice write up Lurch. You know you have 2 years before the next Tassie trip. Ha If you are interested I might be upgrading my brakes in a years time. I will give you a yell at the time in case you might be interested. Get the project going I know you must be hanging to get a little more go out of the Zed. Sounds like it will be a nice job. Cheers Quote
C.A.R. Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 I spose I better update this. As most people have already seen, the rear disc brakes went on a few months ago: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2304.0.html As well as the fitment of front strut tops in the rear to drop the arse of it some more: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2334.0.html It's currently sitting idle atm (while I'm in WA) with a gearbox 'issue'. I'm now saving up for a 'serious upgrade' Quote
C.A.R. Posted November 28, 2008 Author Posted November 28, 2008 This is going to be interesting... Quote
luvemfast Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 This is going to be interesting... Tis that the Hilux upgrade? What size rotors you got? I'm a tall bugger & they have more headroom Your not that tall are ya? Just a bugger! I, like Dimitri, have had to lower the seat in my Z's. Helmet hits otherwise. Quote
C.A.R. Posted November 28, 2008 Author Posted November 28, 2008 Tis that the Hilux upgrade? Indeed it is. What size rotors you got? 280mm S13 jobbies. Your not that tall are ya? Just a bugger! I'm 6'4 - it's a bugger being this tall sometimes I, like Dimitri, have had to lower the seat in my Z's. Helmet hits otherwise. Quote
C.A.R. Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 I finally got around to doing a job I was putting off - repainting the rear tail light panels. I'm fairly pleased with the results! It's not perfect, but neither is the car... The old paint was stuffed, & I hated the colour to boot! I spent $55 on paint at Supercrap Auto consisting of: Plastic surface primer (it's clear, not like normal undercoat). 'Gunmetal' topcoat. Clear coat. I then sanded down the surface (trying to get rid of the cracks, chips & flaking paint etc) with 240 grit paper. Then wiped it all down a couple of times with some prepsol/thinners. Applied a couple of coats of primer, then colour. Next day I hit it with the clear coat. Before I installed the lights back in the surrounds, I polished up the chromed sections with 'Autosol'. I thought the chromed plastic was stuffed, but it turned out to just be really badly tarnished (And yes, the Bus needs a wash). Quote
luvemfast Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Simple things can make a difference. No, I'm not calling Lurch simple. Quote
C.A.R. Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 I'm actually quite complicated - like George. Quote
C.A.R. Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 I've also just fitted a 15/16" 280ZX M/C I just reco'd. I found the pedal to be a bit long in travel after I fitted the S1 280ZX rear calipers & rotors. MASSIVE difference now - no more long pedal or squishy feeling. I'm stoked! Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted December 18, 2008 Moderators Posted December 18, 2008 Good to heat that! So should I order those Porsche calipers for you now? Quote
C.A.R. Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 Haha - don't tempt me mate! I'll be going the Porsche calipers on the 2 seater though... I'm currently waiting for Rob C to finished my S13 rotors, so I can complete the upgrade on the Bus. Quote
C.A.R. Posted February 2, 2009 Author Posted February 2, 2009 Quick update. I completed the front brake upgrade just befor Christmas '08: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,3498.0.html Big difference - stops much more progressively now. Quote
