I've finally gotton round to tackling the tin-worm in the Zed.

Needless to say, the more bog I removed, the more rust I found...

I have new sills to fit (from Rare Spares),

but I have some extra sections I'll have to fab up myself.

Questions? Comments?

i'm currently playing with the same area on my car (i thought you were selling yours?) i think i'm lucky in that most of my rust is confined to the doors (i hope), mayb i should poke around more...

are you planning to weld new metal in and not use bog at all except to smooth it or ? i was just planning to treat the rust and bog away, i'm happy doing just that on the doors but i'm worried about doing it to the actual body and having it spread...i'll take some pictures

the worst rust on the body is at the front of the rear wheel arches, then the front fenders which i guess if it ever gets that bad can just be replaced? (or is there something behind there i should be worried about) as thats my attitude with the doors...i was hoping to keep the removal to below the line, but as you can see on the driver side it has creeped above it

(was your car orginally green?)

Been there, done that. I had the same problem. When I started to strip the paint I decided to take it back to metal. I'm very happy that I made that decision as I found a lot more rust than I would have if I hadn't stripped my Z to metal.

Glad to say though, after Dad and I refabricated quite a few spots on the car, she has finally gotten a lick of etch primer, woot! It took a long time to cut out all the rust and repair, but we are both happy with the result. It may look like a lot of work (and it is), but just keep the end result in mind.

Cheers,

Matt

Thanks for the comments guys.

Zedevan, I was going to sell it, but it wouldn't have passed the RWC

with the way the body is/was.

And yes, my Zed was orig that funny green colour.

I have a STRONG dislike for bog, so I'll only be useing a minimal amount...

If I was you, I'd have a good poke around your sill area -

there?s almost ALWAYS more problems under the skin...

IMHO that door looks like it'd be piss-easy to fix - the fold line is not a problem... PM me if you like & I'll give you my Mob. if you want some advise

Matt, thanks for encouragement.

I have the driver?s side sill to do and the top of the rear wheel arch's.

Going to be a loooooong job...

I actually have Ash (ZR240) to thank too.

After seeing the MAMOTH! job he did on his 240Z, I thought "why the hell can't I do that?"...

As was said above I also found more rust the more I looked. What looked like perfect paintwork ended up being bogged rust holes by the previous onwer. In fairness to PO his repairs were probably 10 years ago.

I am taking my time a getting every last bit cut out and new metal welded in.

The way i look at it is if you are going to spend $5k on a decent paint job get the body right first.

Cheers Davo :D

I'll fix your's as long as I get to drive it round P.I. @ DatNats :P

I used a 4" grinder with a corse sanding disc

I was COVERED with bog dust at the end tho...

My car won't be at datnats mate. I was going to try and do a rush rebuild to get it there, but I have decided the next time it sees the track it will be prepared properly. No more half-assed preparation stuff.

And the idea of 25psi, PI, my driving, and no cage doesn't thrill me. I like being alive.

I'm tackling the sills on my 2 seater at the moment. You didn't happen to find anywhere that supplied the complete sill with the closed off ends and place for fenders to bolt on did you?

I've asked AllZ in Sydney if theirs were complete section or just folded metal like yours but have had no reply yet. Anyone else used the ones I mean?

I've never heard of that type of sill being available.

Whats to stop you fabbing up the ends yourself? - It's not that difficult...

BTW, it's best to call AllZparts - they rarely respond to emails...

Yes thats the one. But not the rails and you can also see a rear wheel arch in the boot. In other shots you can actually see the part no.s still on them. He said on the forum where he sourced some parts but visited website in US and couldn't see sills listed.
