260DET Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 For a project race car, to be similar spec to the present V8 280ZX 2+0 but log booked if it ever gets finished. Body is pretty good, passed the fridge magnet test and no sign of any big hits except underneath where the front part of both rails is bashed in but the rest of them and most of the sills seem OK. T roof has to go, present idea is to make some simple shape patterns from rod and check a wreckers yard for any likely roof donor. Enough of that, the big question is - am I still welcome here or is a Z31 a model too far (cheesy grin) Should I open a project thread or take my Z31 and other 80's memorabilia elsewhere? Thought that the go kart would stop more project car madness but no, it's pretty boring compared with a good track car so it's going to be sold. For some people there is no salvation. 24 Dat 1 Quote
Gordo Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Haha. There's nothing like a good track car. Interesting the go kart thing didn't work. They might let you post some Z31 stuff, but keep it to a minimum . lol. Quote
260DET Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Go kart is fast and has so much grip but it's just not for me, a good track car is so much more engaging. Dirt track go karting might be interesting but no tracks around here. Quote
PZG302 Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 If you are going to log book it Richard, first work out to what rules, 2B/F or 3D sports sedans and go from there. Make sure that the Z31 is eligible for Sports sedans first. If going 2B/F then read the rules, you will be stuck with Vg30 goodness as your motor. 260DET 1 Quote
260DET Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 It's eligible for 3D which is fine, just want it log booked as an alternative to being road registered. It will basically be a backup chassis for the 280, initially. Quote
road rider Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Whatever floats your boat I reckon It's still a Z at the end of the day I have a 200ZR bonnet(with scoop) and some new genuine L and R guards in the shed.........incase you may need some Quote
260DET Posted May 30, 2016 Author Posted May 30, 2016 Pick it up today and will open a build thread, some of the planned work could be applicable to S30/130's so it should not be completely irrelevant to the spirit of this forum. Quote
Bonkers Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 So Richard turbo or non turbo? What ever you plan to do to the Z31 usually takes twice or more times as long as the same job on a S30 or S130. I will give you an example . Change the fuel pump.and do the cost involved. Quote
260DET Posted June 1, 2016 Author Posted June 1, 2016 It's a turbo auto Aub but the car will be getting a V8 so the complete powertrain will be junked. Is the fuel pump in the tank? Quote
d3c0y Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Ohh series 2, that front looks so much better. Question, why build a race car from something that has such poxy suspension and weighs so much? I'm guessing because cheap racecar. Quote
260DET Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 OE suspension will be junked and replaced with S14/15 (wanted) suspension for a start, it will be a long term project while the 280ZX is still in one piece so there are plenty of things which are possible given time and money to reduce weight. Like home made composite swinging panels. Quote
PZG302 Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Richard, I have some S14 suspension bits left over, hubs and some arms, you are welcome to for a slab. No rush on my part as I am backwards and forwards between Aus and Indonesia for the next few months. Quote
24 Dat Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Good to hear Richard and congrats on the new purchase, I know you will be able to remove a huge amount of weight from the car, any more picks? 2+0 or 2+2? Unfortunately the zdriver.com.au website forum, which was the Australian Z31 owners forum is no longer running, so its here or the Z32 sites. There are some great USA sites with loads of info, i will email you some links. Quote
