Going Forwards By Going Backwards?

I have this urge to upgrade by down grading as such...

 

 

After selling my type x

 

I've always missed it but after having had it for 5 years it was time to get something newer and cruiser than the '80 and along came the turbo taxi..

 

but lately ive noticed that a few S12s (gazelles) are coming up for sale. which brings me back to the question of going forwards by going backwards. I use to have a S12 previously when I still had the 180. (you can see hit hiding in the background)

 

now I had plans for this old girl. RB25DET conversion and what not as this was before the mod plating laws were changed. as I was also looking for a zed at this time too I figured I could complete this project and by then I could find my zed and have a new daily (S12) to replace the 180 and have the zed as my project. but fast forward 2 years I had parts line up ready for the swap but my Zed happen to come up and I had to make a choice. sell the S12 and get the zed or keep the S12, its obvious what I chose.

 

it was a few weeks back I saw this ad...

 

and I had legitimately though of selling the taxi for this. a few of my friends couldn't understand why I wanted to get rid of a reasonably new reliable daily driver for another broken ass Nissan. i guess i still have a soft spot for these old girls and its something I cant put my finger on and describe it to others.

 

Any of you guys been in this position before?

I'm still in this position, I still regret selling my first 240z. I've since bought more Zeds and still can't fill the gap that 1 left. I can't describe why, but I think it's because it was my first car and therefore I'm more sentimental about it.

 

The thing is that old Gazelle may seem like a great idea now, but when you get it (if you're like me) you'll start to notice all the imperfections. The less than perfect interior, trim bits missing, surface rust, dodgy previous repairs, creaks and squeaks going over bumps from old suspension and bushes, worn components making the car less than ideal to drive, that electrical gremlin that won't go away and parts that are hard to find.

 

If you love all those things and enjoy the experience of working on it and have a sentimental attachment to the marque then it doesn't matter what your mates think, I just enjoy owning something different and not so run of the mill. That Turbo taxi is something I'd enjoy as a sensible daily car, but I'd refrain from spending big money on it. I'd try keep it stock and reliable just keep the maintenance up etc..

 

The Gazelle does look pretty cool.

 that's it Gav, I guess its more of a under dog thing or just I like a challenge. but the imperfections get toyou over time. I guess that's why my zed is always being pulled apart now haha

 

good thing about the gazelle is she is old enough for club rego too. I might be best off buying a place to house my toys and start from there

As someone who can safely say "has too many cars". This seems like a sensible idea to me. If you have the space, budget and time I don't see any reason not to go for it. The way I look at it, working on cars keeps me out of trouble. I don't drink, smoke, take drugs, or gamble. So at least my car hobby albeit an expensive 1 is a relatively sensible 1.

 

That's what I tell the other half anyway.  >

I went from a XR6 turbo daily drive to a 260Z (I work away a lot and did not drive it much) .... then from this to a XR8 ..... then eventually back to 260Z weekend driver and a boring 4WD as a daily ... plus a 2000 Sports because the Zed was too new

I'm in a similar situation....

 

Ive been thinking about selling my S15, it took me 6 years to build, and 20k in mods at least,  but its finally perfect, and since i finished the build 2 years ago i haven't touched it. I just drive it every day.... But the enjoyment is slowly dying.

 

 

I want something more practical, so i am thinking of getting a Forrester XT, and in the back of my mind, with the spare change id have, im wanting to buy another S13 just so i don't loose a silvia.

See my first car was a S13, and my second, and my third... well lets say ive owned nothing but Silvia's....

So Im wanting to go from a Perfect daily with 250kw at the wheels, which i still get 450km's to a tank of fuel mind you, to a 25 year old drifted, beat up, abused, thrashed rust bucket, which is the exact same car except 100x worse, and a forester "daily" which i know id end up doing a full STI running gear conversion to, and bringing it to the same level as my S15 is now! Id have 3 cars and be driving my mums Holden Barina to work!

 

And i know ill buy the S13, and it will break, and rattle, and catch on fire, and be a massive turd, and ill be angry and want to sell it and upgrade to a "newer car".... which is EXACTLY what i did when i sold my last S13 and bought the S15!

 

(which was going to be left stock! )


What can i say? I guess its just that nostalgic feeling, but what else?

 

Now I'm all grown up, married, have a house, bills to pay, responsibilities, work related stress, like every other adult.

 

I guess for me getting another S13 is my attempt to go back, back to a time when i was 17, with no Mrs, care free, the wind blowing in my hair, not a stress in the world. That's what a S13 represents to me, my youth, which im sure everyone sometimes wants desperately back! and Im sure for you, that's your Gazelle, or your First zed Gav!
 

Its a tough call for you, is your Zed finished? are you happy with it? can you put all your attention into the S12? or will you be tinkering with 2, 3 cars at once? and not really getting any progress done because your focus is always shifting?

To be honest mate i guess ill never be completely finished with the Zed. Currently its drive able and doesn't present any problems but there is a few things id like to make better. I'd guess the Gaz would get all the attention to begin with. but that attention may shift after some things are done. its nice to have some things on the go at once so i can chop and change but it can also be a pain having 2 cars in bits.

 

i guess that time will tell if i get a offer on the falcon that will allow me to be a gaz owner again

Hmmm, car ownership......

 

I was in a position where I was backed into a corner and had to sell a very nice old ZG Fairlane I had, just with a baby 302, but the best cruiser for the trip to Sydney from Brisbane. I had owned it for 15 years and was my favourite car I had owbed up til then.

 

Sold it, kept the wolf from the door for 5 weeks, was it worth it??? No.

 

I was lucky the Zed was down south and not running, so not worth selling and my charger was just a roller and they were still yet to go stupid in price.

 

I am now in a similar situation, but am looking at off loading my hairdresser car. I had fun with it but won't regret selling it, as I can get another better car pretty easily.

 

The Zed only went away because it was broken at Lakeside and the chugger will never be sold. The S14??? I hope it will never be sold, but it could be replaced, at least they are cheap to reshell.

 

I also have my turbo sports car with bloody big boot as a daily, but won't be selling it as it is one of the last of it's kind, and I will be playing with it in the future.

 

If I had my time again, I wouldn't have sold the ZG.

 

It is pretty easy to find a spot to keep a car for a while rather than sell it and then a replacement.
