Wheel bearings and other questions.

Questions:

1. I'm now ready to start the final suspension installation and it's donkey years since I've fitted wheel bearings and in those days I used to go the CBC to buy them - is that still the go? Any particular brand recommended?

 

2. I've fitted 260 (28 spline?) axles to the rear and got the spacers all mixed up in the process. How do I determine which spacer should be fitted?

 

3. Finally, I've fitted the 260Z front hubs to ensure the correct rotor alignment for the Wilwoods. Are the 240 and 260 front bearings the same?

CBC still have the bearings and seals listed and that's where I got mine from. Have had no issues or checked them since fitted. Just use high quality bearing grease when fitting. The rear axle ? I cant help with as not sure what spacers you are talking about. Hope this helps. Looking good mate, you will soon be out and about in that beaut car.

Are the spacers different dimensions? I thought it was just the increased spline count and better metallurgy that made the 260z/280z type stronger. Although it's been a long time since I did mine.

 

I tried getting wheel rear bearings just recently, tried SKF, BSC, CBC and Bursons. All had them available but none had the correct pairings. They were selling mismatched C3 & C4 bearings as kits listed for 240z/260z, OEM and Nissan factory manual list both rear inner/outer as C4 types which have a bigger clearance and therefore higher heat range.

 

SW Motorsport can get the correct C4 types from Japan.

That's an after-market collar on the front stubs that I'll be making but I was referring to the OEM spacer on the rear.

Yes, but I can't remember if they are colour coded to individual bearing housings or there is some number matching. Anyone know?

 

I'm also finding it a PITA to buy quality bearings, e.g. SKF or Timken.

Peter, rear spaces come graded, I think from memory "A" or "B" sizing which should be legible on the spacer. As long as you keep them on the correct side from original you should be sweet.

 

Edit: just saw they are mixed up. Think your only alternative is to check the spacers, if they are both A or B then no issues but if differnt you will have to assemble the hubs and either measure between each bearing or tighten the retaining nut and get a feel for how much preload each spacer provides and swap them around to achieve equal preload.....if that makes sense.

I have a spare set of late 260z stubs with spacers that I could check if that's any help.

Thanks for the input and offers but I have to admit I've done the most unmanly thing of all and read the instructions!

 

David you are correct they are lettered but there are 3 options A, B or C.

 

It all started well when i wiped away the grease on a spacer and could see this.

 

 

Then panic set in again when I hit the bearing housing with a wire brush and this is what I could see.

 

 

The other housing was a bit more reassuring.

 

 

I'm thinking the 'D' is just a poor stamping of 'B' but I'm not convinced

I can't quite follow. Is this a second collar and, if so, does it require a different seal? The surface finish looks too rough to mate effectively with a seal...!
