Jasonisa Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 As the title states im after an N42 Cylinder head would prefer if you have had it tested but if not i would like to know if it came off a good engine. The head that I had on my 280zx was warped and cant be skimmed and i cant send it anywhere for a rebuild it will be too expensive as I live in alice springs Cheers in Advance Quote
PZG302 Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I have a bare N42 in Brisbane that would need servicing to make sure it was OK. It was a spare for the race motor so never did anything with it. Quote
Jasonisa Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 so when yyou say bare you mean no valves, rockers or cam? and has it ever been crack tested and would you be able to run a strait edge over the bottom of the head to make sure its flat.... also most important question how much were you looking for it cheers Quote
dat2kman Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 To do the job properly may require sending it away. When you say " cant be skimmed" how tall is the head? A good indication is between no1&2 spark plug holes, will be an embossed "nissan n42" depending on how much is missing on the bottom of the lettering, your head maybe fine for a 6-8 thou trueing cut. A surface finish of ra40 will give good seal. If the machine shop you talk to have nfi about these details, look for another shop. Being in Alice does present the odd problem,,,, Quote
Jasonisa Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 not sure if i mentioned that we took the rockers out and then put the cam back in we tried to turn the cam it would turn most of the way but became stiff on about a quarter of the revolution, so i was told by one of the best mechanics in this town (which if he is wrong, fills me with confidence) that the head is bent/warped and cant be fixed, btw the mechanic was not gaining any money out of me for this info so im not sure why he would say it if it was wrong Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 20, 2014 Administrators Posted August 20, 2014 If the camshaft is binding it could be a result of the camshaft towers being out of alignment. This can happen if the cam-towers are removed and when re-torqued down in such a way that it causes binding. If the head was previously shaved someone may have put 'shims' under the towers to help with timing chain slack. The cam-towers may also have been removed and then installed again out of order. It is important to mark them in relation to each other when removing so you can put them back in the correct order. I'd check how each cam tower is torqued down, check if different thickness shims are used, check to see if they might have been installed in the incorrect order (any punch marks in the top of them?) The mechanic you spoke to might be right, but doesn't mean it can't be fixed. Quote
Jasonisa Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 ok thanks for the advice the head is still at that particular shop so I will give them a call tommorow and check Quote
