Scotty_Rah Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Can someone here tell me how difficult this rust would be to fix? I bought this car a few weeks ago and will be restoring as much as i can, but I'm no panel beater/fabricator.. It looks bad to me but hopefully someone can give me some good advice.. The other side is much the same.. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 9, 2014 Administrators Posted June 9, 2014 Pretty common, you would probably be best to unpick the roof skin and treat rust in the area then fix this section before welding the roof back on. At least that's how I'd approach it, I'm not there yet with mine though so it's purely speculation.. Quote
EVIL_denver Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 You will need to unpick the roof skin and also part of the rear quarter (past the factory lead fill) to repair that correctly. Judging by that pic you will also find rust in the roof frame. Ive never done this repair but im sure someone on here has. Quote
Scotty_Rah Posted June 9, 2014 Author Posted June 9, 2014 Thanks for the input gents. I think i know the answer, but... Do you think this would be a expensive job if i had a professional do this? :-\ Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 10, 2014 Administrators Posted June 10, 2014 Depends on the professional, unfortunately I don't know of anyone in WA that works out of their own place like Lurch or Scoota do on the East Coast, but I'm sure you could find someone over that way if you ask around. It really depends on the time involved, you have to remove the front windscreen, rear hatch, gutter rails to get to the spot welds, then undo the spot welds. To be honest I'd estimate between $1000 - $1500 without paint work, but maybe I'm off the mark? How rusty is the rest of the car? Quote
Scotty_Rah Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 It sucks being in WA.. Sometimes.. Although I'm positive i can find someone here, I'll be on the look out and asking around for sure. The rest of the car isn't too bad, the doors are the worst but I've got two replacements which i'll be taking care of very soon. The floor and rails are in real great condition, just a few little bits here and there. I picked the car up for a good price and it's still rego'ed and running. there's always a more-than-likely chance I'll find more surprises. I should start a build thread for it soon. Quote

Scoota G Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 If you're on facebook i could send you a link for the repairs i did on mine. I actually have a donor roof here in far better condition than yours. Thing is it would probably cost near $250 to post it out your way. Quote
Scotty_Rah Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Thanks Lurch! Scoota, Not on facebook.. but i could sign up and take a gander. Is the roof complete? like is it a chop off job? Might be worth it after all? If you have dims/weight i could look at courier quotes. PM me if you can, i wont rule it out. Quote
