oldmates260z Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 While I like the car being more original (twin SU's) I am thinking that it would be nicer to drive with fuel injection Is the 280ZX the only and best setup or is there something better? Has anyone done a step-by-step on the conversion or know any mob that can do the conversion? Quote

There are plenty of options around but it will come down to budget. Cheers PB Quote
sydney mike Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Are you having issues at the moment? Maybe they need a tune. My car ran with the british SU's (fitted by previous owner) and stock 240z air cleaner for the last 7 years and the car was smooth as silk. I never had to tinker or tune them in all those years. Only last month replaced them with 3xDCOE's which is a lot of fun IMO, the 280zx efi looks messy and you noted originality ,but the other option of individual throttle bodies (I don't think you have this in mind) is big bucks. oldmates260z Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 Thanks guys It runs well but I am sure the SU's on it now (with standard air filter) are well out of tune, smells of fuel and uses heaps. Does anyone know a good mob in Brisbane who can tune them? The idea of later technology than 280ZX is where I would like to go, any idea of the cost or who to ask? Quote
Six_Shooter Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Given the choice between SUs and stock L-series fuel injection, I would go SUs hands down, I say that as a guy who hates carbs and injects everything he owns. The easiest way to deal with the mechanicals of an EFI swap would be to use the stock L-series parts, such as the intake manifold throttle body, fuel rail and injectors. There are options for the electrnics side and depends on how much you want to do. Obviously there is the stock L-series electronics avenue, which is not what I would do. There is MegaSquirt, this requires some knowledge about tuning, though you should be able to find some very close base maps to start with. There should also be people close to you that could likely tune it. You would have to check with local laws on whether this would be a legal swap or not. There are other aftermarket electronics as well, but they all seem to be more expensive than the MS and sometimes have less features. There is also the option of using other OEM electronics. The Z31 300ZX ECM and MAF swap is popular with many of the L28ET crowd, and I'm sure using the N/A version would have similar results. There's also the option of looking at non Nissan manufacturers, such as what I did for my turbo/EFI swap. I used GM (Delco) electronics in my swap and it works great. While there is a DIY community that use these ECMs, it is not as large as the MS community, so it may take more time to resolve an issue that you have, if need be. I like the Delco, because it can be swapped in cheaply, it's extremely reliable, it has on board diagnostics, and is tuneable with a small investment in hardware, and with the right hardware can be tuned in real time. All that being said, it sounds like you need to get your SUs tuned before anything else. Quote
Brabham Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Yep get the SU's tuned first. Jason (Datman) may be able too do it? Quote
DreamZproject Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 If you want an engine that you barely have to think about that just works and delivers power smoothly go efi. If you want to modify your engine in any way and don't want to spend an absolute fortune, go carb. I personally would prefer if i could use efi, but i want to do stuff to my engine, so the stock efi would let that down. Unless you really can't do much on a car, swapping an entire engine and loom from a 280zx wouldn't be too hard, there are a couple of other things you might like to farm out like fuel lines, pump etc. but overall a pretty simple swap. One of the other negatives of stock efi is that you just simply don't get that amazing sound you'd get with carbs/ ITB's. Overall, if all those neg's don't bother you, I'd go with efi, if they do, just get your carbies tuned (and if you don't already have one, switch to a L28 while you're at it). Quote
dat2kman Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Here is a fairly stock ZX injection setup on the S30 body 280Z It has a built engine. Minor tweaking to some components on the injection side, to ensure consistent fuel delivery at higher rpm ( above 7000) is required. It is a stock stroke 2.8 litre engine. It runs stock S30 brakes. And 6" wide rims with 60 aspect semi slicks. It has run against other 2.8 litre engined cars running SU's and triple 45 webers, four wheel big brakes, and, it just hoses them off. Quote
Cozza Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 That's a great video Jason, thanks for posting the link. Why did you start from so far back in the grid? Made for some very entertaining laps though. What sort of torque / power figures are you getting from it? Mick Quote
dat2kman Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I turned up on raceday with the Datsun Sports 2000, and went out for Qualifying, but had a worrying oil pressure issue once it got hot, in past i had no4 main cap crack in half, so it got taken home, fortunately the Z is in the same field, i turned up with it after a 300 km round trip, ( Warick-Brisbane-Warwick). As i had not qualified the Z, the race director said, Rear of Grid For You! Stupid really, as they know i am usually at pointy end. Turned out the issue with the Dato 2000 was a dud electric sender on the oil pressure setup. GGGRRR Hers another, this time from the front running cars, Mustang blcked rather well! alfa handle brilliantly! Quote
