Johnboy Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I found this, The speed camera discussion again!! https://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/vic-gov-abolish-speed-red-light-cameras-and-return-to-real-law-enforcement SPEED & RED LIGHT CAMERAS Posted in Your say on September 11, 2013 by trx850 Here is a message I just received form a friend, I think its well worth a signature Dear friends, relatives and contacts, I have started a petition to urge the Victorian Government to abolish Speed and Red Light cameras. You might be thinking “Yeah, I agree with abolishing the speed cameras but I think Red Light cameras are good” ? Click on the link below and see my reasoning behind wanting both of these so-called “Law Enforcement methods abolished. PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION. PLEASE FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO ALL YOUR CONTACTS AND ASK THEM TO DO THE SAME. LET’S MAKE THIS PETITION GO VIRAL ! What have we got to lose ? Just a pathetic method of collecting revenue. Imagine this: If tomorrow some research group proved, beyond any doubt, that speed cameras and red light cameras have not reduced the road toll at all. Imagine the next day, asking Premier Denis Napthine “Why don’t you abolish speed and red light cameras NOW?” What would his answer be ? It would be something like: “A, a, a, a, we can’t do that !” “Why not Mr. Napthine, it is proven that it doesn’t work ?” He would have nothing else to say except “Because we would have a massive sudden drop in our revenue” Because that is the bottom line. Governments have become so used to having this revenue that they can’t do without it. They need that revenue so that they can continue wasting it. How much of goes back into making roads and drivers safer ? They will tell you anything to convince you that it saves lives. They will interpret research results to suit themselves and fool the public at the same time. They talk about reduced road tolls but they fail to factor in safety features in cars which have now become standard; Air bags, ABS, Traction Control, Stability Control etc. All these things would have had an impact on the road toll. Have you noticed how many drivers run red lights at intersections where there are no cameras ? Have you noticed how many drivers drive 15kmh or more over the limit when they know they’re not in a speed camera area? Please sign my petition. Please forward the link on to your friends and ask them to forward it further. Even if you don’t agree with me, maybe your friends do. Never mind that it says “100 signatures required” on the website; that nowhere near enough; we need 10s of thousands. Let’s go viral. We can do it ! https://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/vic-gov-abolish-speed-red-light-cameras-and-return-to-real-law-enforcement Regards Ante (Tony) Kasic Quote
JDSM Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Ok wow, let me just say that I'm not an advocate for speed cameras, but... it's pretty simple, don't speed or run red lights and you wont have to contribute to this revenue stream. Now I'm not saying seed and read light cameras save lives (in fact, when they were shut off for a period in the UK road fatalities went down, 'APPARENTLY'), however, they allow the enforcement of sanctions that encourage motorists to be better drivers. I always say, if there is a viable alternative then do it, but this article/letter does not suggest a specific (read: costed) alternative. If someone would suggest a higher police presence, sure, that would be good, but it is all about cost, cameras are CHEAP! Should we be able to fine / prosecute for other offences caught on camera. Yes! So why not breaking very important road rules. If you are incorrectly fined, go through the appeals process, as many, many people did recently in SA when cameras were reading incorrectly. I've always thought it should be more expensive and difficult ( a la Germany, etc) to become road licensed. Either way, it a well-established revenue stream and if you don't break the rules, you don't have to pay. Good luck with the petition though. Quote
1600dave Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Insert grumpy old man warning here..... I have received one speed camera fine in over 20 years now - doing 60 in a 40 school zone because I didn't see the school zone fine. Why only one ? Because I keep to the speed limit. Did I whinge about receiving the one fine / set up a petition about it / etc ? Nope, because it was my fault and I accepted responsibility. Have you noticed how many drivers run red lights at intersections where there are no cameras ? Have you noticed how many drivers drive 15kmh or more over the limit when they know they’re not in a speed camera area? More drivers run the red when there aren't cameras ? How is this supposed to be an argument for not having red light camera's "return to real law enforcement" ? I believe "real law enforcement" for the Highway Patrol" is, I dunno, maybe to patrol the highways and enforce the law regarding road rules (of which two are exceeding the speed limit and not going through red lights).... Moderators Zedman240® Posted September 18, 2013 Moderators Posted September 18, 2013 I think red light cameras do something useful, at least try and prevent some idiotic drivers from running red lights but they do nothing to stop anyone. The most you get is a photo of you being T boned by the gifted individual who ran the light. As others have said, don't break the rules and you won't get fined, but to me speed cameras are just for revenue raising. They only prevent you speeding for the two meters where both the induction loops are cut into the asphalt. After that, go nuts! Quote
luvemfast Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Def keep them, it keeps taxes down. I don't like taxes Don't speed (or get caught) End of story. Quote
