warrenz Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 there's a Z in there......... A New York man retired. He wanted to use his retirement money wisely, so it would last, and decided to buy a home and a few acres in Portugal. The modest farmhouse had been vacant for 15yrs, the owner and wife both had died, and there were no heirs. The house was sold to pay taxes. There had been several lookers, but the large barn had steel doors, and they had been welded shut. Nobody wanted to go to the extra expense to see what was in the barn, and it wasn't complementary to the property anyway......so, nobody made an offer on the place. The NY guy bought it at just over half of the property's worth, moved in, and set about to tear into the barn.......curiosity was killing him. So, he and his wife bought a generator, and a couple of grinders.......and cut through the welds. What was in the barn...............? http://www.intuh.net/barnfinds/afa70.htm Warren Quote

FuzzyDropbear Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 From what I've been told, all these cars were stolen :'(. So the dude didn't get to keep them. They were stored there for pickup by some dude who, for some unknown reason, never showed up. Quote
mayhem Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 I WOULD BELIEVE THAT IT IS TOO MUCH OF A RANGE FOR SOME OLD MAN TO HAVE Quote
NZeder Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 This was first post a few months ago on other forums - I believe a reporter actually followed up on this "barn find" he apparently tracked down the guy that took the pics. The story the reporter found out was something like this. "The story is that the guy that collected all the cars was a car saleman or yard owner and every car that come into the yard that he liked he took and put in this shed for storage (add to the collection)" I am not sure if they were paid for or as someone has stated just taken "The guy posted this story about a barn find to see how much interest there would be in such a story and told the guy that took the pics to keep the location secret" I believe this might have been to see if anyone would be interested in the cars - I can't recall the full story as I read it sometime ago on another website - I will see if I can find the link to the site that talks about the truth behind the "Barn Find" Quote
NZeder Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Found it see http://www.sportscarmarket.com/articles/archives/1110 for the full details but here is a small bit of the story behind the story THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY Manuel Menezes Morais shot the photos, but he was sworn to secrecy about the cars’ location and the owner’s name. However, he was able to obtain permission from the elusive owner to give me the following information: The owner of the cars was a car dealer in the 1970s and 1980s, and decided to save the more interesting cars that came through his doors. When the barn was full, he padlocked and “soldered” the doors shut. (Perhaps welding was too permanent.) Web sites varied on the number of cars: 58, 100, and 180 were speculated. According to Morais, there are 180 cars in the barn. And, aw shucks, none of the cars is for sale. Clara was able to determine that the cars are located somewhere in the area of Sintra, near Lisbon. I asked Morais if he could ask the owner if he had a favorite car. “He has lots of good cars in very good condition,” he says, “but he loves the Lancia Aurelia B24. He has two.” Quote
NZeder Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Also see http://www.autoblog.com/2007/07/31/portuguese-barn-find-hoax-still-going-strong/ for the story of the hoax - and people keep the whole NY purchase barn find story going. Quote
Jimbo Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Thanks for the good detective work NZeder, Well Done Quote
modular9 Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 ok but... The cars are in a barn. They were found ( by the photographer who was asked by the owner ). Therefore it is a barn find. The story might have been modified from the truth but it is still a barn full of rare cars that before the photos were taken were unknown. Let a middle aged man have his wide eyed child like amazement moment for a little longer before the crushing weight of real life comes crashing back. PLease! ;D Quote
