Hi i bought a 240z yesterday and ive just been looking at the bonnet at the front and the gap between the bonnet and lower airdam is smaller than any 240z ive seen is there any reason behind this could it be that the owner has modified it. picture is below. any help would be appreciated.

the bonnet has been modified so when the bumper is fitted there is no grille replace or modify the bonnet and fit a grille should be ok but i would be worried about it overheating in its present state, has to be off a 260z, 240's dont have the vents

Thank you Linton so I'm guessing the previous owner changed the hood. By any chance is there anyway to tell if its a real 240z or some 260z with 240 plates slightly paranoid now that the good isn't original

Going by rims, bonnet vents, and the height of the interior dadboard cowl, it's probable a 260 body.

Are carbs flat/square tops, or curvy domed kind of round tops? The squarey ones are 260.

Engine number?that drop lip from lower front edge of bonnet is good for reducing front end lift at speed, provided the bumper bar slot is left open in middle, ie fit "bumperettes".?

The airdam looks to have air in holes.

Prob not a good idea to sit in peak hour traffic carparks on a hot day though!

I recognise the car from gumtree...

it was reported to be a low number HS30 so it is a 240Z... unfortunately from the pics on gumtree it looked as though it had none of the early stuff left in it... Congratulations on getting a Z, and welcome to the forums... if you need any help let us know, I have always found the guys and girls on here great help for finding out all sorts of bits and pieces about Z cars...

Cheers, J

Hey Mate, i wouldnt worry about it being a 260Z because someone has changed the bonnet and wheels. It's pretty common to do that stuff and easy to put back. Take some more pictures of the car and post them up. The compliance plate will be a dead giveaway, if it's pre '74 its a 240Z. There is also a datsun plate with the VIN and engine number on it.

I very much doubt that it would over heat if the cooling system is in good order. All G-nose cars don't over heat do they!  ::)

As Dat2kman said all Zeds have a massive frontal area which in turn drastically increases drag. Doing this modification would actually help reduce drag due to a smaller frontal area.

Thats a modified early 260z or 240z bonnet as it doesnt have the raised edge around the vents. Looks like the vents were added. Also no indicators on front gaurds so its at least 240z front guards.

I enquired about that car 6 months ago and the owner was reluctant to provide details. Did you do a background check on it as if i remember corectly the vin number on firewall had been restamped as it was crooked in the pictures and number plate didnt match the vin.

What suburb are you in? I can come and have a look for you.

the car has matching numbers on the compliance plate and vin plate the owner seems to have owned the car since he was young. here is a pic of the compliance plate and the datsun plate  weathers bad at the moment so can barley get photos. also thank you everyone for the help. i also checked the engine its got the curved carby tops.

The plates can be easily swapped, as Peter Allen said, checked the chassis number stamped into the body on the firewall, near the brake booster.

Car might not be the best one out there but with enough time and money anything can be made better :)
