  1. There was a discussion about vinyl roof's here http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/1605-240z-with-the-vinyl-roof Not my cup of tea that's for sure and even with all this talk of originality there is no way a vinyl roof is going back on the car. As for rust underneath the vinyl, my car is exceptionally rust free in the area where the vinyl roof was fitted. Maybe a previous owner did the only logical thing and had it removed early in the cars life.
  2. Thanks for that, you are a genius Taylor. I had never seen one with a vinyl roof before but google was my friend and you are absolutely right. Looks like there was a couple of styles as well
  3. Been a bit slow on the car of late as I have been doing some painting on a friends motorcycle parts to get some gun practice in preparation for painting the Zed. I got a free afternoon on the weekend and spent the time filling in the hole where the radio antenna goes. There was also 6 drill holes in the LH rear QTR that I needed to fill in. They are in a straight line but I have no idea why they would have been there. Anyway they are welded up now.
  4. Hi Cozza, I may have a problem but I don't think it is that bad yet. Nothing like a cold beer after a long day in the shed working on the Zed.
  5. My beer tastes better when it is cheap and on tap and talking to my mate about zcars.
  6. Really amazing build with exceptional attention to detail, especially as it is used predominantly as a "race car". For anyone who hasn't looked through the whole build do yourself a favour and have a look. Well done.
  7. Well done George and Paul. Looking really good. Better pull my finger out now - the race is on!!!!!
  8. Very interesting to know that Mossy. I have wanted to copy you with the Porsche signal orange for a while, I had only recently decided it should be 918 orange to keep with the originality theme. I was even looking at FG Falcon "octane orange which looks pretty similar to the other 2 oranges. Your comments just make it easier to stick with 918 orange. Hi PB. Have no fear I will paint it whatever colour I like, the only problem is I like quite a few colours. For me 918 orange is a nice safe choice that I know I wont regret. I do differ from you though as I have never wanted a bus, always preferred the 2 seater shape. Each to their own, Love is in the eye of the beholder.
  9. No fuss at all Gav. I was just thinking out loud. I have an ability to change my mind about things like colour multiple times a day. Having said that I have always known deep down I would paint it orange just now I lean more towards 918 orange for originality. It is always interesting to hear other people's opinions. Cheers Jeff
  10. Yep, absolutely right George, bring on 918 orange. I can't see why 918 orange would make the car worth less in the future than 907 green.
  11. Hi Gareth. You are absolutely right - it's my car and I can paint it any colour I like. There are a lot of factors involved in the colour decision though I suppose. For instance as the value of these cars is increasing I find the effort of my build is increasing as well. I never meant to invest this much time and effort into this car, like most of us I wanted to get it driving as soon as possible. I wanted to hillclimb it and track it and the big clause was to not invest to much money in it. Well my mindset has changed some what as the values have increased. I find myself thinking about future value of the car and how the choices I make throughout the build will affect that. Not that I am looking to sell the car anytime soon, I just find that I cannot ignore the future financial side of things now that these cars are starting to be worth considerable money. As for wheels. I already have a set of 16x8 zero offset wantanabe wheels - alloy spoke with polished lip (thanks to Mossy).
  12. Yeah I like the blues as well. Another car I really like is this car that was featured on petrolicious. I am not 100% sure of the colour code for this one though.
  13. Thanks for the input everyone. They are all nice cars in there own right. However since I have had this car (10yrs) I have always had one colour in mind. I have swayed from this colour occasionally but I always come back to it. Here are some examples. I have always liked this car - love your work Mossy, just possibly some of my greatest inspiration. I like this car and have been tempted to go with this colour. Decisions, decisions.
  14. Ok Gav, convince me. Show me some pics of 907 cars that might sway me to change my mind. Christmas is a long way away, you may change your mind.
  15. Yeah that's right Gav. Personally I don't rate 907 green very highly. I can't explain it, I just don't like it. I have seen a few cars painted 907 that I quite like - the green hornet for instance, but I don't think I will be doing the car in 907 even though I like the idea of keeping cars in original delivered colour.
  16. Thanks for all the "likes" and encouragement, it certainly helps the motivation to keep going. The dent in the roof will be easy to sort, it was just bogged previously. I was pretty happy with the overall condition of the body so far. All in all it is very good for a 46 year old car. In 240Z terms this one is almost "rust free". Cheers Jeff
  17. Well this build has now caught up with real time now, so the updates will be slower to come in the future. The car is finally out of the roti, makes it a lot easier to move around the shed now on it's wheeled trolley. The rear quarter has been taken back to bare metal and is being prepped for primer. I have been trying to decide on either getting the car professionally painted or painting it myself. I got a quote a few weeks ago and I am leaning towards getting it done professionally. The workshop I have been talking with wants the car delivered to them completely back to bare metal, this will save me some money. So over the last few weeks I have been madly trying to strip all the paint from the car. So far I have found one small dent in the roof on the passenger side, a previous repair to the rh front guard and some small rust in the passenger door. Not to bad all in all.
  18. Next I had to finish up the rear inner wheel arch areas left and right as I didn't do them when I did the floor (That was a big enough job as it was). Here is an assortment of the usual repairs to doglegs and the hatch slam panel.
  19. Thanks. The other early shell was Mossy's first 240Z (There is an old build thread on it). It had some damage to the drivers side footwell/firewall area - creased impact type damage and the rear wheel arch's on the rear quarters had been butchered for old style moulded flared guards. Nothing too bad. Mossy had already put new floors in and done most of the slam panel repair. The guy who got it from me was a panel beater by trade who had a very rusty 240Z and he planned to use his rusty one for the bits to sort Mossy's one out. Thanks John, Coming from a guy with as much experience as you have that means a lot. It is a lot of work and I find it hard to stay motivated. The feedback from other members is really good for keeping the motivation going. I was so motivated that tonight I ducked out to the shed and quickly sorted the underside of the floor out!!!!! No seriously, I started prepping the underside of the floor about Mar 15 and finally painted it late Sep 15. I had a bit of paint left in the jar so I painted a few loose parts that I had already sandblasted and were ready to go.
  20. Good to know. I had read of people having trouble spraying KBS rust seal, I would love to see some pics. I was tempted to leave the engine bay black myself but have decided to keep it pretty original and do it in body colour.
  21. Hi Rudi, It is hard to put a number of hours on the repair. I have been at this car for 4 years now. In the earlier years I was slowed down by these 2 ratbags In the last year or so I have been able to get a lot more done as the girls are getting a lot more self sufficient. The pics make the KBS finish look better than it really is, overall I am happy with the results. I have had more trouble with air bubbles (might look like dust) in the finish, I have found if the paint is a little to thick or you apply it too thick you will get air bubbles that cannot escape. I have had better results when I have used a little bit of the thinners to thin it a little more and it only takes a dash of thinners. I also have found a better brush (3-4 dollars) gives a better finish and I clean them up with some prep wash thinners and reuse as well. Cheers Jeff
  22. I brushed it on but can be sprayed. For the diyer I recommend brushing it on and with a bit of practice and learning to get the consistency right you can get a pretty good finish. I will be painting the engine bay in body colour but the underside and wheel arches will be staying as they are. I have done 2 coats on the underside of the car, the whole front end, the wiper box inside and out, drivers door all except the outer skin with 2L @ 77 dollars per Litre. I reckon that is pretty cheap considering the protection it provides. It can be painted over with any paint system as well.
  23. Nice work, looks great. I will check out the bush kit as I am nearly ready for some suspension reassembly myself. She was pretty warm today!!!!! I did some hot days in the shed over xmas/newyear myself, if you get the tiime you have to try and use it, rain, hail or 40+ degrees I reckon. I Keep the fluids up and take some breaks and I seem to cope ok. Cheers Jeff
  24. Thanks for the kind words. Thanks again for the shell Mossy. The best thing is that your old shell is going to be saved by a guy from Vic that bought it from me. That shell sure has done some kms on a trailer. So from here on you will see a lot of KBS rust seal used. It might look like an ad for KBS, but the truth is I researched it, tried it and I liked it and seem to now want to use it almost everywhere. Well not quite, I am using it in the rust prone areas and the underside mainly. I will let the pics do the talking.
  25. The finish looked pretty good of the gun. It will look fantastic when you have finished the polishing. The 240Z looks good, you must enjoy the restoration process if you are going to get staight into that one. I'm not sure I could do a second car myself especially straight after 4 years of work on the one I just finished. Great job, excellent build. Cheers Jeff
