  1. Now you tell us you've got electronic ignition, bugger me why didn't you mention it in the first place. Zed tacho's don't like electronic ignition, you'll need to build or buy some type of converter to make it work....or go back to points.
  2. The resistor is mounted near the coil.

  4. I that the one with Datsun?
  5. I Like, would also like the option of self build.
  6. I think you have done as much as you can without seeking professional help.
  7. Might be your ballast resisitor going open circuit. Not costly to replace, it will either fix it or you're going to be looking for a new tacho. Good luck and let us know the outcome. (FWIW, my tacho was intermitant like this and I blamed a solder joint inside the tach. The problem was a *********ed resistor!)
  8. It's quite possible you haven't set the needles correctly, this is the only (crude) method of enriching the mixture on these carbs. I didn't mention it at the time as I was under the impression that you had only "fiddled" with the throttle opener. Did the instructions that came with the gasket kit give you the specs on needle height?.
  9. Well if you think thats the cause, then why have you asked on this forum. I can tell you that it isn't and the problem lies in the carbs, more specificly the idle mixture. It only needs a little amount of buildup and they will leak gas. To solve this you MUST overhaul the carbs. There is no other way. Nuff said.
  10. I don't have a diagram, but on the left there is a large screw about the size of a 5 cent piece. This is the idle mixture. Screw it all the way lean (in). Adjust your idle speed using the idle speed screw. These are the only adjustments you can make with these carbs. If there giving you to much trouble, chuck them and invest in some round tops.
  11. Ok, now I can be of help. Firstly, if they need Overhauling, forget them and find some roundtops. The O/H Kits are rare if not un-obtainable. Secondly, you can't change the mixture, this is factory set. You can however change the idle mixture. I suggest you set it as lean as possible. Can't help you with pictures as I'm a dinosaur and don't own a digital camera. The best information is contained in the FSM. If you follow the procedure contained within you can set them up properly as long as they are in good working order. HIH
  12. pauly, I 'd love to help you, but you need to write clearly and correctly. I'm running FT's top very succesfully , however, without clear and readable questions do not expect replies. Remember this is a web forum, not a txt or sms forum.
  13. Just wondering where you came by the zx distributor?

  15. Luke, I've used B&B Beck & Borg in Huntingdale. They did a great job on the 260 Head when I dropped the cam dowel. Total rebuild, new valves, machining shimming cam towers etc cost me $400. (that was 7 years ago so expect a increase). Highly recommended.

No, the 260 is a later style. IOW, they are not interchangable.
  17. Don't discount an electrical problem, I had put up with erratic running for 14 years always blaming mixture and air leaks. Last week I had the ignition system looked at after cracking it. Result, ignition componants where basicly stuffed after 30 years, new coil, ballast resistor, new crimped and cleaned contections have resulted in an unbeleavable increase in performance, even the tacho works now!
  18. my 73 is 103305. Draw your own conclusion! Perhaps he said it was a 70's model (covers everthing doesn't it). Interested in the serial as I thought I had a late model 240, this one is a month or 3 later....FWIW.
  19. RX 7 Fuel pumps where commonly used on zeds. Probably very hard to find now, but you could try Allmaz in Clayton.
  20. The new CH proposal is 90 days, The weekend Sat/Sun is 2 days and a rally/event starting on a Friday finishing Sun would be counted as 3 Days. There are a lot of pro's & cons for the change, if one looks at it as one use for one event (as it is now) then the only restriction is private use, although you can obtain permission in the form of a permit from your club CH officier for other use excluding commercial hire such as wedding etc. I guess the Nats would be 5 days and in the new proposed system would you would use 5 maybe 6 to 7 days, rather than 1. Of course, you could buy another 3 zeds and use 1 ever day! A road worthy isn't required and the car is generally check, just to be compliant with the rules of the club ie. it is the age that you say it is! FWIW
  21. Just in case anyone needs a PBR Replacement slave cylinder (much better option than using a repair kit as it costs less than $20). PBR JB4055 is the number you need. Apparently, the cross reference book no longer includes Datsun 5 speed tranny and requires inside knowledge of an older parts guy to get the right part. Prick of a job to get to, suggestion to anyone who needs to replace the slave (hard to change gears, crunching etc are all symptons of seals failing in the slave) is to remove the entire unit including the oil line from the master then remove slave from transmission cover. Bolt slave up in vice, find a 3' long ratchet to lossen the line from the slave, replace and fitup. Bleed and guess what...no crunch (also no fluid leak).. FYI & FWIW
  22. Try McGills in Elizabeth St.
  23. Wick Humble has the best zed resto book available. Tech Bookshop had copies(I've been told they closed @Xmas, but I haven't verified that) or Pitstop in Perth. Fantastic covered on complete strip down, repair and how to put the pieces back together. Buy it you won't regret it.
  24. I believe that the black bit is for fog lights. The spot for the hazards is clearly seen on the centre fuse box lid. There is space for 3 switches (from memory). Hazard, Rear Window Demister & Parking Light (JDM) which allowed either side to be used as marker lights.
