zanzee01 Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 Hi everyone, had the upholsterer up today and have a problem! My car has no roof lining in it at the moment and so he is unsure of how the roof lining goes in... does anyone have pictures of their roof lining that they could post and I could show him at all? Or instructions if you are clever enough to have done it yourself? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks heaps! Quote
Scoota G Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 OMG! Sack the guy and go buy yourself; 1 piece of vinyl the same size of your roof (in your color) A similar sized sheet of 6mm foam 1 can of contact adhesive. Then report back. Quote
Retro Z Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 I agree. Get a new upholsterer or try it your self. As Scoota said its litereally thin foam and vinyl glued straight onto the roof skin. Quote
FuzzyDropbear Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Just make sure you buy some higher temp contact adhesive... I stuck a new headliner in my U12 cause the old one was falling down and used some cheap stuff I found. Needless to say, the first warm day, the glue unset and the new liner fell back out again. So went and bought higher temp stuff and it hasn't moved since gav240z 1 Quote
fluegel Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 OMG! Sack the guy and go buy yourself; 1 piece of vinyl the same size of your roof (in your color) A similar sized sheet of 6mm foam 1 can of contact adhesive. The original foam is 12mm ,quite soft. Use Sellys quick grip or Bostik or a 3M equivalent, the yellow stuff used for gluing laminex . Spray or brush a thin layer on the foam and let it dry so that the final gluing won't soak in. When glueing the foam to the vinyl it needs to be almost dry if it is too wet then it may come unstuck prematurely. Do a dry run on the roof checking for fit obviously you would use the original liner as a pattern if you havn't got one you will need to make your own pattern ,thin cardboard would be best. You need extra to tuck under the trim about 1 1/2 to 2". You need to mark clearly a central point front and rear to line up with a mark front and back on the roof. You may need to remove old adhesive from the roof with a contact cement stripper being careful not to scrape through the paint underneath (the stripperI used didn't attack the paint) You need to use a lot of glue 1-2 litres leave the edge unglued say 2" to that you can push the liner under the trim with a thin piece of ply or plastic its edge rounded with sandpaper. Position the liner so that the centre marks line up and the liner overlaps the trim around the edge and push it lightly along a central line front to back so that it hangs in place. Using a towel rolled into a ball push the liner into place starting at the centre line working towards the edge so that it doesn't pucker up. When the liner is in place you can then carefully push the edge under the trim with the tool you made. Go over the liner again with the towel pad don't push so hard that you compress the foam so much that it stays permanently compressed although if you presealed it BOTH sides the final gluing shouldn't have penetrated the foam. Cheaper than buying a ready made liner from the U.S. Richard Quote
zanzee01 Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 Wow! Thanks for all the great advice everyone (and the really comprehensive instructions fluegel), yep I think I'll get busy and give it a try- see if I can glue my eyelashes together putting the glue on! LOL I am going with white headlining- should I continue the white down the pillars or make the pillars black? I have a black dash going in, am unsure which would look best. Was a bit worried having white on the pillars might be a bit distracting while driving (but really, I drive past those construction workers without any issues.... ) I am also having trouble with the plastics- mine are a bit broken up and I was looking to see if I could just go all out and buy new ones, but I can't seem to source any, the overseas ones are for 74 models and before. Any suggestions? I have also heard tell of people having plastics vinyl wrapped- has anyone had any success with this? Thanks Quote

If your head lining is white I presume the original colour scheme was white so the pillars would be white. My 260 is off white ( bone) for the seats, transmission vinyl cover, plastic panels in the back, pillars ,trim around the roof and head liner and sun visors. The carpet is black as well as the centre console and the dash . You can buy a new dash from Canada about $2500 I think most people get them recovered. New centre consoles for 260 Zs are available from the states about $300 + post. If the plastic liners in the back area are not too bad you can respray them as I did you could fix cracks with superglue. The covers for the rear struts are only available in black from the U.S. so you may need to get new ones made or do it yourself, vinyl is cheap enough sewing it is a bit of a skill but possible. zanzee01 Posted August 12, 2012 Author Posted August 12, 2012 Hi Richard, Thanks for the advice. I have had my dash restored as it was really really bad, back to original black. Am having a go at super glueing the plastics, there are a few parts around the holes that have broken off but I am going to attempt a cut-and-shut effect and see how that goes. The vinyl patterns are complete- just mouldy and feral so I will get the pattern from them and make new ones I think. My interior will be a black and white combo, but yes I think I will continue the white down the pillars. Thanks for all your help Quote
aircobra Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 is that the same thin foams that goes onto the backs of the seat shells? where can i get it from? Quote
