Hopefully this topic hasn't been breached before (a quick search yielded no results)...

Has anyone else dreamt of a fully equipped workshop, with shared hoist, etc?

I have been looking into a factory unit with space for 8 cars with a roller door and room for a hoist. Is there enough/any interest from Sydney guys to possibly pursue this?

Aside... I have had to move around a lot for work, and am back in Sydney, does anyone have garage space they want to rent out? PM me interested!

Cheers,

Mik

Good concept, sort of like the Men's Sheds thing for older guys that have retired and are driving their wives nuts.

What have you looked at so far, indications on actual squre meterages, and rentals being asked?

With the number of businesses going under there could well be landlords keen to get some income.

You'd have to go in as head lease holder, and sublet to others.

Look at workshops attached to a petrol station, and contact leasing agents asking for long vacant units in complexes in industrial areas.

Sounds good in theory but I reckon would be too hard to manage.

Everyone would need their own caged? Or walled off area with workspace and power etc.etc.  Not to mention the fights over usage of the hoist and tools/parts maybe even cars,  going M.I.A.

Then there's the liability/insurances... Add this to the fun task of having to chase everyone for their share of the rent.... Good fun!

Yes there would be many positives like having people around to help, chew the fat and getting advice from different sources in the one spot but the negatives would outweigh the positives for me.

Well I have found a place, it has a hoist, air, welding bay and other cool bits for $350 a week. Two mates and I are seriously considering it. 2 x 1963 Eh's, 1 1954 Buick Coupe, a TA22 and the Datsun

Will be a flipping sick workshop.

Go for it. Its a pipe dream of mine to but a big block of labs that can be subdivided and then put a massive shed I the corner of four or more blocks.

Seriously consider security though. Industrial sheds are prime targets for theives as they are often vacant at night and generally have large scores of easily movable items. Maybe some web based battery backed up cctv, so at least you haver video of whoever broke in. maybe even mount then high out of reach/sight.

I would love to do something like this some day, problem is like Mr Sandwich mentioned. Hard to manage.

I went to www.thepitlane.ie which is a DIY garage in Dublin a few months back. Unfortunately it seems it closed :(

All that's left now is what the Googlebot cache captured of the website before it stopped working.

I guess I had intended to use it more, but due to being away on Holiday etc.. I only ever really went in once.

These seem to have worked well in the UK however so not sure what the difference is between Ireland / UK. I don't see why it couldn't work in Australia but you need to find a bunch of enthusiasts who will use it regularly I'd say and that way they will see the value in it.

God knows I'd love a car lift. Hate breaking my back working on cars.

Thanks for the links Gav, I wasn't aware of that type of DIY arrangement, but essentially that's what I want. I'll speak to the lawyers this week  :(

I will let you know how it progresses

Oh ones other thing. Since our is no longer a residential garage (though it isn't quite a workplace) you might have too test and tag the electrical equipment regularly and service equipment etc. imagine if someone hurt themselves on a peice of faulty equipment and your the one on the lease responsible for making everything safe.

I would be keen for this if it was like the DIY pit lane setup that is in the link below or possibly sharing a fully setup garage if some of the details like security could be sorted.  If it was just going to be a shared garage between a couple of members then I would think it would be best to keep the number of people pretty small otherwise you'd never get access to the hoist on a weekend.

Any ideas on where in Sydney you would be looking to do this?
