Pedro Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hi guys, Can i remove my R200 on wheel ramps? (longnose R200, 260z). Are there any issues tackling this the normal way as per the datsun workshop manual? i dont have jack stands. just looking to get diff out then back in (everything else staying where it is) many thanks, was hoping to do it tonight if possible, aust day under the zed! happy Australia Day! RB30X Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Your biggest issue will be removing the driveshafts while the diff is in place. I've always done it on car stands but I'm sure it can be done. Quote
C.A.R. Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 It's easier on stands. Excess pressure on the wheels on the ramps may cuase binding on the half-shafts during removal... Quote
RB30X Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Youll have to drop your control arms anyway so there won't be much holding onto your wheels making it a bit unsafe. Get some stands or borrow some bits of wood, even chuck some old wheels under. Quote
Linton Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 i just took my donor 260 out on ramps pain in the backside but doable the longer half shaft was a bear to get off I also had to take the wheels off to undo the outer h/shaft bolts, I just left the rear hanger thingy mustash bar drooping there its not going anywhere Edit rb30 is right safety first Quote
Pedro Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 cheers for all the advices. i took a look at it all under there and with the weight and my current time levels, lack of wheels stands, and the potential for snags, I think this one i am getting the shop to do. normally i dont agree with this but this time "just because I can do it doesnt mean I should do it!" PZG302 Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Duck.down to shit and shiny or repco and spend the $50 or so on pair of stands and do it that way, easier and safer and the stands will be handy for future jobs. Quote
dat2kman Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 You dont need to drop the lower control arms, You will need to rotate shafts, and insert a long handle screw driver blade into uni joints openings to stop them spinning as you undo the nuts holding the inner ends of the half shafts to the diff output flanges. Just then undo the two nuts on centre of rear moustache bar, undo two bolts holding front of diff to front diff mount, then undo bolt holding diff mount to fronta x member, remove the rubber band loop bolts. Lift nose of diff, slide forward, till rear studs clear, it will drop out, just be aware it is heavy!! I have romoved diffs on car ramps, not difficult, you just need to get good leverage on the two spanners to undo inner half shaft ends. Pfft car stands!! Use chunks of hardwood!!! Quote
Pedro Posted January 28, 2012 Author Posted January 28, 2012 Thanks all for the advice on the way about removal. Just thought i would let you all know, i wimped out and had the job done. I didnt want to lose a day trying to get shafts in etc and for a couple of hundred the bloke did the work and guaranteed it. The 4.11 open spinner is in! replaced a 3.54. Got the car back just now. One thing i can say is its felt like the car is much more alive. really gets moving quick off the line now. like the way it should. I did expect the change to be a bit more drastic by in reality a 4.11 is fine for every day use from my impressions so far. Rock on. Quote
