PSCRAQ Round 4 Lakeside 50th Anniversary Sports Car Meeting

Well, round 4 of the Production Sports Car Racing Association of Queensland championship is almost here. It will be held over the weekend of the 22-24th July at Lakeside as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration meetings, this one for sports cars.

 

After my efforts in round 3, I believe I am still sitting in the top 3 for the 2B championship, the pointscore is not avilable yet, though the car is looking second hand.

 

With thanks to the generosity of Greg for giving me a couple of headlight buckets complete, I will be able to play. Also, many thanks to Dimitri, I will be picking up those guards in August on my through Melbourne.

 

I will be spending the weekend finishing off the spoiler mounts and getting the front end fitted up before pulling it all down again to fit a headlight and paint the panel beaten guard and yellow bucket so it at least is the one colour.

 

The attached pictures show the before, from when i got the car home and started pulling it apart and the second shows the during with the guard beaten into a shape and the headlight bucket bolted up.

 

Time has been a problem with a week in Melbourne training for a new job and now a 80km each way commute to work from brisbane to the Gold Coast, but I will have it all up and running on the weekend, just hope another set tyres becomes available next week for the weekend, though the current ones will do the weekend.

 

This meeting promises to be a big one with an expected 36 Prod Sports cars expected to run, including a big contingent from down south. The field will be split on saturday into 2 groups based on qualifying times. For the championship I hope to be in the faster group to be able to keep in the championship hunt.

 

Would be good to see a few faces out at the track over the weekend to enjoy what should be a great race meeting celebrating sports cars.

Matt, i' back this weekend, if there is anything I can do to help you nail this one let me know, jet lag permitting.

Good luck, and drive hard, don't forget, when you come into each corner and lift of the gas, hover over brake, say 123 then brake, you will gain meters, and the car will still do what you want.

Thanks Jason, I should have a spare ticket if you want to wander out for a look see. The only other thing that would be nice would be a new set of 240/640/18 slicks if you can manage that, I can arrange for the fitting

 

From the entry list I am the only Zed running in the whole meeting!?!?!?!? At least someone else could have entered regularity if they wanted to do the sprint type thing, or come and have a play in Prod Sports with me, we don't bite.....

 

We have 31 cars entered for prod sports, not counting any late inclusions that may pop up. So the Prod Sports will be split into two groups, not sure on how that will work yet, but all going well I should be in good shape to keep the championship points coming. The fiedl is made uip of plenty of MX5's, one Z, one BMW M coupe and a few late model "Phillip Island HQ's" from Germany. It should be good racing.

 

There's also some Italian cars, including a F430 Scuderia, what ever that is, sounds Greek to me 

 

In the invited field Bap Ramano will be running the Kaditcha Group C sports car and Tony and Clark Quinn will be running the Mosler and the Aston Martin DB9R. Also listed in the competing drivers is a familiar name, a Mr K. Bartlett, who looks to be having a run in the clubman field

You know how it is running such a technological sophisticated machine and the data I have to sift through and debrief with at the end of each track session with the Z, I may not get a chance from my busy schedule as well as tear my self away from the crowds surrounding the one true car of significance at the meeting.....

The website was updated with the latest Championship pointscore today and I'm still sitting in 2nd place with a fair gap to 3rd. Just need to get a good haul of points this weekend and in November and I should be able to snag 2nd or 3rd for the year.

Not so good a day for me today 

 

In my second, and to be last time out, I overlooked it outbraking myself into hungry, forgetting I had the old semis on and had to go straight on. The end result was the new front spoiler is no more......

 

On the plus side, everything else went well. Now looking forward to tomorrow with the goal being to qualify in the top half of the 36 car field.

 

The other highlights included watching the VIP Petfoods DB9R go round and getting a good look at the Mosler.

Not a good.day today, qualifying I was slow with a 62.7 to be 8th in the slow field. First race was scrapped due to a stuff up with flags wither the front runners shown a red flag instead of green and the ensuing confusion meant we would get a rerun at the end of the day.

Next race was better, starting from 6th with a shuffle of cars I finished 3rd by 200th of a second missed.second as the other car had the dormant in front of mine. All good, the other driver was apologetic and 2nd to 4th put on a show that had the crowd on their feet and the biggest reception for us on the cooldown lap I  have seen for a long time.

Our next race was a cracker for 3 laps that saw me move into 2nd place on lap 2 and then was challenging the leader, passing him on the run down from the eastern loop to be put into the fence on the outside when he chopped back to the right hitting my front left. I was then put into the wall which shortened the front left corner by about 4". The Green Monster is now no more. I will have a better idea tomorrow, but the chassis rail looks pretty ordinary and is up against the extractors.

 

An unfortunate reason, but I will have plenty of bits for sale in the next few weeks as I part it out.

Yeah, I'm all good, just a little stiff in the neck.

Next Z for me will be a road car, but that will be a few years away.

 

The next race car is already in the planning stage, so I need people to come and pick at the carcass like vultures to raise the money to get the race car under way. So if you want a good motor, some wheels, or rear cut let me know.

 

Today i'll get the car into the garage and start pulling it apart to see what's what. So far what I see isn't pretty.

Mate this is really sad as I met you and your car at the LapZ day and loved the sound that came out of that upturned pipe. Also your car was green like mine. Not many green Zeds out there. I wish you all the luck in the new venture of replacing the golly green Z. You must have some Irish blood in there somewhere.

Matthew, ( serious time now) do not be too hasty , take stock of what you have, and what it has taken to get the car up to the stage before the smacking you just gave it.

It will be salvageable , Rich Graham had similar to his at Classic Adelaide a few years back, car was repaired and now all good.

The cost to start over is going to be prohibitive, what you have is a repairable decent package that can still perform quite well, so if you are going to sell it off, don't give it away for next to nothing.

Certainly pull it apart but before you sell stuff off get a few of uus to look at it stripped and let's see what it needs.

 

Or you could just go silly and buy my blue Z, you know what it is like!

 

I can foresee that you will turn into a coiffured hairdresser type with a Mazada Em Ex 5, me thinks.

The safety gear did it's job as did the general preparation and build of the car, without the cage and the stitch welding I'm sure I would be in a lot worse condition.

 

After a good chat with Jason, I will be making a final decision on what to do in the next week or so. I have spoken to a panel beater about the car, but after initial discussions it looks like it isn't worth my while to try to resurrect the car, and for the dollars it would cost to build another Z to be as quick as this one was I can go a lot faster for less in a more modern car.

 

When I do get another Z it will be as a road car only as I don't think I would be prepared to write another one off.

Yep we had a good talk, upshot is that bent as it is Matt is going to sell it as well as his rather decent collection of parts off with it as a whole job lot, this would make it quite easy and cost effective if anyone on here wanted to convert a stock Z into something quite decent mechanical wise for street or track use, and with all the stuff extra Matt is going to throw in for the one set price, the buyer can either keep as spares or sell off to others to recoup cost.

 

An alternative would be for say three or four members pool funds and take the lot and split it amongst yourselves.

The rear and turret are not bent, so the shell will make a good rear half cut.

You will need a trailer a ute .

Matt will be playing in a Datsun two door, but something a bit more interesting, after all I probably have some influence over him, he is a good steerer, has racecaft, and wants to play and should while he can.

 

BTW I have driven this Z and can vouch well for it as a package of engine box brakes and suspension.

Over the weekend i will be making an inventory of all the bits that will be sold and putting together a package in the for sale section.

 

As Jason said, the package will be the car as it sits in the garage with all my spares, including 3 other diffs of different ratios, as well as the 18's on the car another three sets of wheels, 2 L28 short motors plus an extra N42 head as well as other spares I have such as injectors, rods and so on.

 

Hopefully, over the weekend I will get the post out in the for sale section and it will be listed on the forum exclusively for a period 2 months before I advertise further afield.

 

After the 2 months, I will consider seperating, but I am looking at offering the job lot at a good discount over the individual prices, and these will be listed in the inventory.

 

The money will be used to finance the purchase of the next shell to build into another 2B prod Sports Car, still a Datsun, but a little more modern and a lot quicker. Goal time for this car when it hits the track is 57's around Lakeside to be at the very pointy end of the field.

Sad to hear she's done but glad you're still going to be around and in a Dato.

 

I might be interested in some things, especially the wheels as its the only thing stopping me from dropping mine off the stands so might be worth a chat with some other members as Jason suggested..
