can anyone give me any ideas on what might be the  problem with my 260z. its been sat there for maybe 5 years befaore i accuired it. i managed to get it started yesterday, but it sounds like its only running on 4 or 5 cyl. its also spewing out ALOT of smoke and smells stronly of oil. weather it as old fuel in the lines or if it has a broken ring(s). i dont realy want to be pulling it apart if it is uneccisary. any ideas or tips would be much appreciated. thanks

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Sounds like DEATH !

Did you drop out the plugs oil up the bores and crank without spark first to lube them before firing it up?

Linguini, also, most of the members on here expect a new member to read the INTRO GUIDELINES before posting the first time, it's considered a bit rude to post selling something or asking for advice first off.

Maybe if you had done so before starting your car up, you may have got some useful pointers from some of the great mechanic's on this forum.

Cheers

a motor that has just sat for years will have surface rust in the bores (at least).  then when you start it the rings scrap along that surface rust.  this does two things:  wears out the rings very fast and as the bores aren't as smooth as you would like, lets oil past them to burn.

You are right that old fuel that been sitting in lines or the tank will cause problems.  Fuel in the lines will have partialy disolved fuel lines and fuel in a tank will start to separate.  Neither situation is good for a clean burn or eficient ignition, hence crap idle and run.

You might find that it's not all together too late.  Take out the plugs and runs some oil into the cylinders and allow it to soak overnight.  Drain the tank and flush the lines with clean fuel.  This might remedy the situation to a bearable level.

In the long run your engine will need a hone and rings and seal replaced.  A motor that's going to be left for a very long time should have the internals coated in oil, but very few people go to the trouble.  Good luck

Post up in the Introduction section and show us some photo of your ride.

i had oiled it prior to starting it, the tank was drained of old fuel and new fuel put in. i also put new oil in the engine and through the plugs before starting it. i am by trade a mechanic, but i just thought there might be any pointers out there that ive missed. i think ill just strip it and build it again replacing attthe rings and give the bores a good hone, i think that alot of the gaskets might need replacing to.

thanks all the same

listing a 64,0000 question guess show on a forum wont teach you how to diagnose a miss in a engine,  if you are a mechanic i suggest you go through the normal procedure, just dont forget what you have checked

If you are a mechanic wouldn't you know the answer to your own question?

Or were you hoping we'd tell you about that hidden button that zeds have on the dash that stops them from running on 4 cylinders and blowing smoke and oil after not running for five years.

Do a compression check of each pot and see where you are.

It is difficullt for anyone to indicate 'pointers' that you have missed when you don't provide all the info to start with.  There is nowhere to hook up a laptop to find the easy answer.  It sounds like you have done all you can, and I strongly suspect that you knew that already, so bite the bullet and pull the head off and have a look.

i pulled the head off this morning and by the looks of things the head gasket was leaking between cylenders 5 and 6. that could explain the smoking. and i also found that there is to much fuel passing through the carbies. and flooding the engine. im guessing the float bulbs might be gummed up. and no i wasnt expecting there to be a magic button to press, but i tohught you might no that every car is built and works diferently in their own quirky ways. i just thought there may have ben a little somethin i might have missed.

thanks for all your help MaygZ,
