mikuru15 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 so im 17, still on my L's but ive fell in love with the datsun 240z, i hope to buy one soon but chances are i'll never be able to get one because even at the moment they are hard to get and very expensive i think, the time i get a stable income, they will probably be ultra antiques by then, what are your thoughts? any chance of me ever owning one of these beasts? Quote
. Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Well the world is due to end in 2012 and a good 240z is around $20K I figure being 17 you probably have a disposable income of around 50c per week. So in the 20 months left on this planet you will probably have around $40 so the answer to your question would be.......no! But seriously when I was 17 I was asking myself that question about way more humble cars than a zed. You really just need to take it one step at a time and not make too many stupid mistakes in life that are likely to limit your chances of success. One example......Don't buy some Cr@p box and spend a billion dollars or you'll never get to your dream. Good luck Quote
nizm0zed Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 there is plenty of work out there if your willing to roll your sleeves up and get dirty. push trolleys, stack shelves, wait tables ect ect, evening jobs will give you cash without getting in the way of studies. You should also look at what your spending your money on now, ask yourself 'do you REALLY need it?' Eg, if you smoke a pack a day, quitting can get you over $100 a week spare. Buy a cheap money box (those sealed tin can ones) stick a pic of your favorite zed on it, and stuff all your spare change into it. Before you know it, you'll be the owner of a new money pit ;D geez, when i was 17, most of my money went up in funny smelling smoke Quote
tbscobraZ Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I bought my zed at 17 I got a great deal though. Look for a 260Z instead of a 240Z as the extra $$ is a big difference. Having said that not much progress has been made with mine but it was "the one" and I plan to keep it so all is well and good. So don't be completely discouraged but it is difficult and not as practical as a modern car. Not for the faint hearted. Quote
. Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Oh and another tip. Keep your eyes open. Occasionally a really run down zed will come along for $1K or so. It would take a heap of effort to get it up to scratch but it is the other way to go. But the risk is losing interest part way through the resto. Have ou worked out how much you can save in a reasonable time? That would be really useful information for us to give better advice. Another useful piece of info would be whether you have your heart set on a 2 seater or whether a 2+2 or even a 280zx would satisfy your zeditch (I just made that word up) Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted March 2, 2011 Administrators Posted March 2, 2011 My advice, buy a cheap econobox as your first car and save your pennies for a project car. Something that needs some love and work. Take a short course in welding (since most of these cars are rusty as) and practice your welding skills on some scrap metal. Then when you are ready get stuck into the Z. If you really are truly enthusiastic other members on here will take note and many of our members are willing to lend a hand. So don't feel you'll get stuck on your own. Oh and don't listen to your mates!!!! Mine were always telling me stop wasting your time on that 240z why don't you get a Silvia or a 180sx or some other common as muck car. For me it was never about how powerful or fast the car was, but about owning something unique, with the timeless sports car shape. It was also about learning about cars, how to work on them and improving the car. The Z's are relatively simple so an excellent starting platform. Good luck. Quote
luvemfast Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 First of all, welcome. Just remember that most of us have had our cars for years, they didn't get to these stages and conditions overnight! I've been working on Z's for over 20 years and I'm only 32 years old. It's all about life balance, save your money while still maintaining a modest lifestyle. You'll get there if you have goals and targets. I found the best money saver was to stop going out to nightclubs when I was early 20's, saved s house deposit based on that! Quote
mikuru15 Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 thankyou so much for all of the advice, im currently on work experience at a supermarket getting paid chump change, hopefully they said that if they get good word from the other staff they will put me on part time, so that would be good, im quite a good saver and i dont smoke, all of my money that i get goes towards train fairs for school im always looking in caryards hoping to see a broken down z for sale, that i could do up, unfortunetly im not so good in mechanics but im learning once again thanyou for all the advice and feed back. jamo240 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Hey young fella. One other piece of advice the other chaps have missed. Don't get married until you've got your Z...she'll never understand. And, make sure you've got a pre-nup that protects it. I managed to hang on to my 240Z when I got divorced, but only on the highly technical legal argument that I can sleep in my Z, but I can't do laps in my house. I don't think that defense works anymore though..... so my current future ex wife understands the situation .... I can keep the car provided I give her my semi-vital internal organs. Jamo Quote
MaygZ Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 .... I can keep the car provided I give her my semi-vital internal organs. Jamo I suspect I know from where she'll extract the said organs ..... which should make a hole big enough for her drive the Zed straight up ..... Welcome young fella. Enjoy the ride - (Zed and life) MaygZ Quote
