Hello again everyone,

just as general as the topic gets, it should also be a little interesting, as everybody obviously has their different opinion and way of doing things;

What kind of petrol do you put in your car, that is powered by an L-Series motor (Mainly L24, L26, and L28 as this is Z forum).

Do you run the cheap ethanol? Or do you cherish your Z so much so that you use High Octane (98's)?

Perhaps you are different (Cheap :P ) and you using LPG? Uber cool/unique so you use Diesel (L28 Nissan Patrol diesel)?

Let's let loose, and obviously remember to have respect for our fellow Z members in this topic (All of you ofcourse! Why else would you be here)

Hi Pete, as you say you run the E85, i have carried out some very extensive tests  with this fuel and i have found that it is a fuel you cant suggest to the average motorist to use , this fuel has a catch 22  attached to it , the fuel is what it says 85% ethnanol which is 85% alchohol or if you metholated spirits which is a vegetable based fuel, the fuel itself absorbs 30% or one third of its volume or weight in moisture, and does not blend with fossil fuel or oils , and or synthetics, so there is a lot of changes required , i would be careful recomending using this fuel , could become a very costly exercise , just look into that one very carefully

But Daniel, the thread is what you use.

Nowhere does it state to recommend anything, nor does Peter state that anyone should try it. All Peter says is that he uses it in his racer, which if anyone has cared to look at, is heavily modified.

If 53-681 were to go and put E85 into his newly roadworthied car, he's asking for trouble!

With my last cammed L28 with the EFI, BP Ultimate worked well for me; or if I can get my hands on some Aviation fuel (illegal on the roads though and sprints) that would be the best..but at around $4.20 p/l, out of reach now..

There is a guy in NDSOC with a 180b SSS running a turbo L18 with water injection on straight gas, reckons that its a great way to get some performance for his car.

Goes to supergas and gets the straight propane, calls it his racing fuel.

And the government helped him pay for it too  ;)

+1 for BP ultimate for me too

i use 98 in all my cars from the MX through to the XR8 and the race car. Easy to get and once the tune is done is all good. Plus the cost is relatively cheap compared to the racing fuels, and if I am not racing for a while, I drain the tank in the zed and use the fuel in the MX.

I use 98 in all of my cars or 95 if the higher octane fuel is not available.

I also use 98 in my Subaru Outback and believe the extra expense per kilometre is easily justified by the improved fuel economy which has the effect of negating the higher price paid. I do 450 kilometres to work plus the same on the way back, and have always found the economy to be higher. In fact, with the higher fuel prices, and the price differential remaining pretty much the same in cents per litre, the 10% increase in economy more than compensates for the higher price per litre paid plus it extends the range of a full tank of fuel - a relevant factor when I drive from the city to my rural property and then have to drive additional kilometres to get to a bowser with 98 in it.

I use Sunoco 260GT but it's a turbo circuit car.  I'm keen to switch over to E85 in the future as lots of people are getting great results in boosted race cars with it and it's a fair bit cheaper than the Sunoco.

I use a dash (5%) methanol in a tank of Shell Ultra for a margin of safety against knock in my turbo engine. I have a slightly richer injection calibration (Motec M48 Pro) for it, as the stoic ratio is different to straight petrol. While the calorific value of methanol is lower than petrol, the increase in effective octane ratio is impressive, and I can put 5 PSI more into the engine with no knock. I also buy the methanol in 20l drums from CSR, and this way you can avoid paying fuel excises...it's quite cheap this way!

Toluene is spposed to be pretty good too, but I've never used it.

Cheers

I run 98 in everything I own/ed and have also found that in the daily, the extra economy comes close to EXACTLY off-setting the extra pump price. I had some issues with injectors dirtying and causing rough idle in it and since the switch not only does it have a touch more response, it's over-all much nicer to drive and costs the same, or if more it's only a minuscule margin and well worth it!

Hmmm to be honest, I didn't think unleaded fuel ran on the L-series initially... Weren't they on super/leaded pre-5 years ago???

Do you still have to choke after starting the motor, etc. ?

Lawnmower much?

Btw, where to purchase e85's

Japan had been using unleaded fuel since some time in the 70's

pretty much all their cars were designed to use it.

Australia was just slow (like usual) changing.

generally, if it has an alloy head, it has hardened valve seats and will run fine on unleaded.
