Reputable yet affordable Locksmith?

My Z never came with keys unfortunatly... Know of any good/cheap locksmiths around???

 

 

Also, is there a way I can pop the boot without the key???

I get keys cut up here for $33 for two and just take in the lock. Is a 2+2 or a 2 seater?

What I found with locks approaching 40 years old, any Zed key should be able to pick that lock. Or any similar shaped key should do it. Just insert it and wiggle it around..

On ebay you can purchase a complete new set of locks and keys.

have to agree with this, if it is the original lock, something resembling the original key should work for you

I've purchased a couple of complete sets (tumblers & keys) from Oakleigh Locksmith's, in Atherton Rd.

Got them to key them to the old (original) key, not sure why I did that now but there must have been a good reason for it!

if you join racv roadside assist and get the best level of cover which is about $150 your entitled to a locksmith for up to the value of $200. i once broke my key and the guy came out broke into my car and cut me to new ones from the number on the barrel. plus you get roadside assist for a year!

I haven't had time to write it up yet, but I bought a set of 4 door locks from an ebay'er in Singapore (designguu), he advertises them as pairs but will sell a set of 4 keyed alike if you ask.  I have a mismatch of locks from different cars and no matching keys.  The door and fuel filler locks all look alike but the hatch lock is very different.  I dismantled the hatch lock until I could get the tumbler out and then swapped in the pins from the 4th door lock and put it all back together.  Fiddly, but DIY doable.  Individually they all work fine though I haven't yet had time to fit them to the car, partly because I've misplaced the hatch lock retaining plate!    The tolerances on the locks aren't as good as OEM but I think they'll do OK.

Hi Zedback.

I am going through replacing door locks for my 260Z 2+2 (I also bought from designguu). I would love to have the four locks keyed alike. If you ever did the writeup you mention below (I know it was a while ago), I would love to see it.

 

Incidentally, I found the new locks didn't just swap in like I had hoped. The key would unlock the door, but not lock. There was too much play in the mechanism that by the time I had turned the key the full amount, it hadn't pushed the rod down far enough. All the plastic bits seemed ok, and I couldn't find anything wrong anywhere else (I had a bent rod in there when I bought the car 13 years ago). So I made a new plate that attaches to the back of the barrel, with lots of play in the unlocking direction, but little play in the other direction. 1.6mm steel, cordless drill, and a dremmel, and Bob's your uncle.

I've ordered a set for my 240 and it solves all of the problems above. You can also use the designated boot lock (with spring) in lieu of the stock Z push lock.

 

I purchased my kit from Supercheap auto and the closest i found in size and mechanism (with what they had in stock) was from Toyota Corolla hatch AE92, Toyota Celica St185, Toyota Starlet EP91.

 

I purchased the 4 door starlet ones and have test fitted them on door, fuel lid and hatch and all works well.
