Tonyger Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Hi, My name is Tony. Reside in the south eastern side of Melbourne. Been looking at a few 260z's, hoping to buy one in the next few weeks. I turned 18 not too long ago, so my experience in fixing a car and what not is not all that high. But I'm down to learn. Money is somewhat of an issue for me also, the car will cost somewhere between 2-6k and i have another 7k to spend on top of it. Will it be enough to make it half decent and use as a daily? Apart from the fact that i really want one, a few issues have come up regarding registration and roadworthy. Would it be simple to get both of them done if the cars are not total rust buckets? Thanks in advance. Tony. Quote
AussieZed Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Hey Tony, Welcome, I'm in the SE of Melbourne as well, restoring my '75 2+2. If you are willing to spend closer to the $6000 end of your $2000-$6000 budget you should be able to get a reasonable car. Two seaters in that range can be a bit rough but I've seen some nice 2+2's for $5000ish incl rego and roadworthy. Buy one that is pretty standard (since you're 18!!) and spend some $$ slowly on making it the car you want it to be. My only advice is to take some care on which car you buy, and don't be impatient. Structural rust is the big thing to look out for, so check the wheel well, the chassis rails and damn near every where else. If you haven't had much experience looking at cars this age there are lots of people in the club willing to offer their advice. Ideally take someone along who knows zeds and knows what to look for. I'm happy to offer my time if you are going to look at a car in this part of town, but there are many others who know a lot more than me. So good luck, take care and you should get yourself a really nice car. Cheers, Ross Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted October 31, 2010 Moderators Posted October 31, 2010 Welcome Tony, Good luck on the search! If you can, try and use that 7K you have for work put towards buying a zed that has had a bit more work put into it; if it has had a resto, ask for pictures taken during the build to prove what work has been done. Good advice from Ross, when you do find one, take another person with you to check.. it may save lots of headache afterwords. Quote
Huw Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 Not sure with 260's but you are not looking at much of a 240 for that price. Depends on how much you want to do.....if want a runner and not too fussed about perfect finish/getting all the rust out, should be possible.... BUT, I know people that have spent 10k+ and still gone close to a rotisserie and full repaint to get it right. I spent 2k to buy and probably 10-15k to restore/rego etc etc...while at uni (had budgeted 6- Spent the entire time broke but ended up with a nice car at the end of it. still a couple of niggling loose ends to tie up tho. Moral....pick carefully.....also, if you can....before you buy measure the bugger! if it is not straight (not just by eye) you may be in for a bit of $$$. Quote
Scando Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 If you can, try and use that 7K you have for work put towards buying a zed that has had a bit more work put into it Great advice. It generally works out a lot cheaper to buy a car already restored. Are you after a 2 seater or a 2+2? There should be plenty of 2+2's within your price range if you use your extra 7K on purchasing the car as already suggested. Quote
MaygZ Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Welcome Tony. I agree that for $12-13K you could buy a pretty nice 2 seater that would need little or nothing for RWC. Then you have a good daily driver that you could slowly personalise to you taste, instead of having it on blocks in the old's garage for years while you chase rust and parts around - and catch the bus to work/school! Enjoy the hunt and good luck. MaygZ Quote
